Law of the Sea Treaty Threatens Sovereignty
Newsmax ^ | 11/24/04 | Paul Weyrich

The election may be over and conservatives have won, but that does not mean we can relax. We still need to stand guard to protect our nation’s sovereignty. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted in February to send the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST) to the Senate floor.

...

LOST would have our country surrender its sovereignty on the seas to a body called the International Seabed Authority (ISA), whose membership is stacked in favor of Third World nations. If the Senate ratifies LOST, we will have given the ISA the authority to determine what rights our country will have to mine minerals located on the ocean floor and the right to tax their extraction.

More than that, we also will have granted the ISA the right to regulate our transfers of military technology, even the right to determine in what situations our Navy can stop a vessel.

Conflicts involving LOST will not be settled by our country’s courts but by an international tribunal.

Good post.

The ISA is like the ICC - a bunch of people who think real-life should be like Star Trek, with one benevolent organisation running everything.

LOST would have our country surrender its sovereignty on the seas to a body called the International Seabed Authority (ISA)...

Despite its strong record of standing up to the United Nations, the Bush Administration has dismayed conservatives by supporting ratification of the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST).

Seem to always be the way for this administration.

“The current slogan being echoed by Treaty supporters [is] that we need to have a seat at the table to influence developments; somehow supporters ignore the math of one seat among approximately 150 seats, the power of the one nation/one vote principle and the overwhelmingly anti-American agenda of at least 120 of the 150 seats that we are going to be sitting with.”

Sigh.

From that link:

"On February 25, 2004, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 19-0 to send the resolution of ratification of the Law of the Sea Treaty to the full Senate for advice and consent. The Bush Administration said on February 7, 2002, that there is an “urgent need for Senate approval” of the Law of the Sea Treaty."

19-0 and the Bush Administration is behind it -- that's a lot of momentum.

The Dem votes are obviously not a surprise: but Hagel, Brownback, Sununu, even Voinovich -- that does surprise me.

From what I've heard, LOST is a non-starter in congress. It's been bottled up in committee for years because the supporters of it have known it doesn't stand a terrorists chance in Iraq of being approved. I need to look into where the congresscritters and the executive stand on this, but it may well be a good thing that it is coming up for a vote. If it fails in the senate, it is a Dead Parrot. As long as it is still out there, and having not been voted on, it's proponents can still push for it, and it's principles. It could sit in committee until a congress more favorable to its passage comes along. (The globalists have been waiting for this to happen for quite some time now). Once it is actually killed, it is dead.

We need to make sure that it does, indeed come up for a vote, and is voted down decisively. Having the treaty remain in limbo is not in our best interests.
