Without the South and the Sun Belt, were dead meat. My successor should remember: When the South was a reeking hospital corner of brutal racism and cretinous, Bible-thumping prejudice, it was overwhelmingly Democratic. Now its overwhelmingly Republican. Whats wrong with this picture? Has the South changed? Not really. The South stuck to its guns and now its running the show. We changed and were not. We need to take a long, hard look at our former glory in the 13 states of the old Confederacy, reopen the files on great Democrats like Bull OConnor and Sheriff Haney, revisit that simpler, more innocent time when Democrats controlled the market in racism, bigotry, book burning, and sanctimonious humbuggery. Of course, we cant embrace these things as wholeheartedly as we once did (and the other side now does). But theres always a centrist, progressive version of them if you just look hard enough.

Oh yeah, the author was an editor of "The National Lampoon" (still hates P.J. O'Rourke from those days) and was in "This is Spinal Tap".
I read the review of that book on WSJ and was fooled into believing that the guy was a Christian, until a did a little research on the man and came up with some vile comments criticizing the former editor of the WSJ for his conservativsim. I didn't bother to read any more about him. His book was a Hillary-like attempt to claim that leftists can be kinder, gentler, more open minded Christians than conservatives.
I know that in today's world most Christians are going to be conservative, but that doesn't mean that liberal Christians are an impossibility. As long as you accept that Jesus died on the Cross for our sins you are a Christian.
He's also been accused of molestation by his stepdaughter
Granted, and I know a few in my own parish - though I have a hard time understanding how they can support pro-abortion politicians and still be Christian.
This particular author, however, is so full of hatred that I have to question whether he is in fact a Christian.
By their fruit you shall know them.
Yeah, the article has some pretty despicable stuff. I guess I'm just a little sensitive because I've only recently become a Christian and was a liberal Democrat prior to the Lord finding me. I think I might have been driven away had I been subjected to a litmus test other than that of accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior. I also know that the woman in the cube next to me stopped going to a conservative evangelical church that she loved when the pastor endorsed Bush.
What did he do in "This is Spinal Tap"?
Oh, never mind. He's the cricket-bat-wielding manager, Ian.
The Confederate battle flag has 13 stars, and the Confederate Congress had representatives from Kentucky and Missouri. Those states never actually seceded, and the federal forces had control of most of the territory of both states throughout the war, but there were a lot of Confederate sympathizers in both states. The author may not know much about the Civil War and just know how many stars are on the battle flag.
The south is not a place full of bigotry and hatred. It is the blue areas that are filled with that kind of filth.
"The south is not a place full of bigotry and hatred. It is the blue areas that are filled with that kind of filth."
You're right.....most of the Southern Democrats that I know are the most racist people you would ever meet.
