US says not look for contest with Russia over Ukraine poll result

WASHINGTON, Nov. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Outgoing US Secretary of State Colin Powell said on Wednesday that the United Stated did not lookfor a contest with Russia over the poll result of Ukraine.

Powell said he had a "good" conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and both the United States and Russia are interested in finding a solution to the Ukrainian crisis.

"What we are trying to do now is to use diplomacy and use political actions to resolve this. We are not looking for a contest with the Russians over this," Powell said.

Powell did not go into any specifics of any possible solution to the Ukrainian election crisis.

"One suggestion that has been made is another election, but there are other suggestions out there. This is the time for all alternatives to be examined carefully, to be examined in light of the law. And hopefully the parties, acting reasonably and doing everything to avoid any use of force, can find a way forward," Powell said.

Powell's comments came after Ukraine's Central Election Commission on Wednesday declared incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich the winner of the presidential election.

Commission head Serhiy Kivalov said that Yanukovich has won 49.46 percent of the vote and the opposition leader Viktor Yushchenkogained 46.61 percent.

Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko has claimed that he was denied victory in the presidential poll by fraud and declared himself president on Tuesday during an emergency parliament session attended by his supporters. Enditem

Well, I guess Powell finally consulted with Bush and is softening his big pronouncement that the US won't accept the results of the election -- as I said before, on the "Breaking News" thread .

Powell, pulling in his horns and backtracking -- obviously he didn't have the backing of the White House, only that of Schroeder, for his earlier statements.

If you want to believe the Chinese press, I think I'll wait to form an opinion based on more info, I did hear Powell say the declaration was unacceptable.

I am getting to the point that even the Chinese press is more reliable than the US press.

I am sure, eventually they will pick it up as well.

LOL! The "more reliable" press is whatever press lets you grasp at straws. The source doesn't seem to matter.

I found Powell's statement from the State department website and posted it. It is consistent with what the Chinese press reported. As I said, the US press is less reliable.

We don't need to nuke Russia, so I don't want your false dilemma. What I want is (a) to reject the fraudulent election results, and (b) to conduct a free & fair election.

Wow! The first is done and the second is getting negotiated. Cool.

Powell:

The Central Election Commission has just announced official results and declared the current prime minister the winner. We cannot accept this result as legitimate because it does not meet international standards and because there has not been an investigation of the numerous and credible reports of fraud and abuse.

Period. The rest is your fantasy.

It really doesn't matter what Powell says. He's gone.

It does matter what Powell says when he's announcing the official position of the U.S. government, because that won't change due to his departure.

Ask Donald Rumsfeld what he thinks of Colin Powell's position on the war in Iraq?

This little spot of limelight on Colin today was his finger in the eye of the Administration and his "friend" Rummy.

I don't believe that .. because it's silly. Nice try, though.
