Several years ago while I was working on my thesis, I contacted some family members of the man who commanded the Civil War unit I was researching. They have all been very nice to me. I personally travelled and met two of the great-granddaughters and their husbands, and have kept in touch periodically with them, also exchanging Christmas cards each year.

One thing has really bugged me though, especially since the 2000 election. Each year at Christmas, one of these sisters (and her husband) sends a standard form letter full of political horse manure. The other sister and her husband (a retired Navy officer) have nothing to prove politically, and use the Christmas cards to send their holiday cheers. I find it totally inappropriate for these retired college instructors to use their traditional holiday greetings as a means to spill their political guts. I thought that this was supposed to be a time of cheer and good will. They wasted two large paragraphs (in an otherwise short note), to demean President Bush, his policies and the war in Iraq. One of their lines in this year's letter is: "...and make judicial choices that do not favour right wing ideologues."

I'm finding it harder and harder to be nice. I'm almost tempted to send a card telling them how I feel and sign it: Your friendly-neighborhood right-wing ideologue.

These people are supposed to be educators, but perhaps that is part of the their problem. They actually believe that Iraq could be contained like the Soviet Union. There's nothing like living in la la land.

I'm probably moving to Florida next year sometime and will just forget to send them my new address. That way they'll never find me and I won't have to wade through their yearly political baloney to find their season's greetings.

"At least my children have a brain."

One of mine does, the other doesn't.

My friend and I have communicated and I need some wisdom for my response. Would you be interested in a freep mail (although the HTML wont show) or email look-see and advice??

Sorry I was slow to respond. I think I am more of a village idiot than someone who can impart wisdom to another. But if you have a question go ahead. :)

Here is the final final from my old, now ex friend. She could not talk, just argue, No ability to have a give or take discussion. No ability to learn. There is nothing as stuck in its shell as an old leftist. It was not much of a friendship but I cared for her.

She said:
"We have opposite perceptions of the realities of the world and of what is important so unfortunately we've reached a point in our friendship where there isn't much to talk about, only to argue over."

Never stay friends with someone who is too small.

Sorry to hear that it came to that. Sounds to me like she was the one who didn't believe there was any friendship to save. Consider it a learning experience and know in your heart and mind that she is the one who lost out in all of this, and she lost out because she is now without you as a friend.

I've lived it all my life. My parents were much more liberal than I am, and so is my wife. In the end, it's not so bad. Politics don't make the person.

I did know that there wasn't much there, but I never realized how shallow she was...she hasn't changed since she was fifteen.

But your parents and your wife are broad enough to talk and interact with you. A woman who picks a fight when she discovers that an old friend votes for George Bush, then demands an accounting, then decides to end the friendship...well, there is no depth of character there.

The other freeper mentioned it. It's probably the most perfect movie ever made, not one cuss word or sexual innuendo in it at all.

I join you in your sadness. Right before the election, I went to NY for my yearly visit with a life long girlfriend and told her that I wanted to see Hitlary's new house. I had made a sign in took it along to take a photo of myself so my friends in CA would believe it. She didn't know what the sign said and we drove up there and when we got to the house there was a line of cars going slowly and I was embarrassed to get out and make a fool out of myself. I still didn't think anything. After returning home I called her to tell her I would send money if she would represent me at a Rick Fazio event and she said "absolutely not as she was a Hillary girl" and with that I went into total shock. Calmly I asked why and she said "because Hillary's for the children" and I kid you not those were her exact words. She's an educated stock broker. I have avoided seeing her ever since and last week she said it had been 5 years and why didn't I want to see her? We have spoken but nothing like before as I just don't think I can keep my mouth shut forever. By the way, after 911 she did call to say the "right person was in the White House and there would be lots more to come" and I thanked her for calling. Just blows my mind how some people just don't get it. Oh, the day of the election in 2000 she called to tell me she had just voted had I? Sure it was a dig so I just calmly said I had voted absentee and I had my elephant outfit on and was just leaving to drive around and get out the vote. No comment. Very sad.

Loss of a friend is dificult, but things do change.

You have made lots of FReeper friends. Perhaps that will in some way compensate.

You are right that things do change. I guess the intolerance of it all surprised me.

Anne of Green Gables is a wonderful series.

Yeah it is, also it teaches where if you have setbacks after setbacks, it still pays to forge ahead. Maybe you might not get to where you plan to be but you'll get somewhere and be happy with it. Very clean too, I would recommend the book and movie series.
