Friendship is dear, but I think this one might be a lost cause.

The one thing all of the above have in common: An obsessive hatred of Bush (and Republicans) that overwhelms everything else in their life.
My friend was always able to hate well. She hides it under the auspices of concerne for the "innocent Iraqi people".

I'm very close to a couple of democrats who are long-time friends. We don't discuss politics.
Friendship is more important.

I have 3 liberal acquaintances that explain my relationships the best.
One no longer talks to me because I would not allow him to malign our troops, our reasons & involvement in Iraq, etc.
Second just hasn't spoken with me since just before & after the election. I think it is let down; she will recover.
The third thinks she is a liberal, but is apathetic for the most part. I usually challenge her when she parrots the liberal line. But, she hasn't stopped talking to me. Our differences are just that, differences. But, she never, ever says degrading things about our military or actions in front of me. She knows that is off limits.

The EXACT same thing happened when I replied "all" on a list where the intellectual snobbery was reaching a peak. I just stated that the reason they lost was right in front of their faces, arrogance, hubris, hatred etc...
I think they might have boken a few keyboards at the closing because I noted they should keep it up, we'd be happy to hand them their asses at the midterms and in 2K8 ;-)

My friend was always able to hate well. Here's the problem - she may well be more interested in the hating than anything else. The fact that she is obsessed and refuses to discuss anything else points this way. If she were a conservative she'd be a stormfronter or one of those reclusive survivalist types.
You may just have to mourn a little while and then leave this one behind. As you said on the phone, you never knew her.

I have a friend here at work that had his friend email him out of the blue after the election; essentially screaming about abortion, etc. She took her anger over the loss out on anyone she could on the "winning" side it seems.

Hello,
I am the co-leader of my son's Tiger Cub Den (Cub Scouts for 1st graders). I knew that the leader (a really nice woman, BTW) was a Dem, and she works for the Fed. Government here in St. Louis. We had a Den Mtg. on Election Day, after school (which saved me an ulcer, as I missed most of the bad exit polling!). Anyway, she and her kids noticed my Bush bumper sticker, and her oldest asked me if I was a Republican. I said yes. He said (he is in 5th grade): then you are EVIL. I said, thank you for your opinion. He, said that he was just kidding, and I (of course) let the matter drop.
It amazes me, as I try very hard to teach my son that in America, each of us are allowed to make our own decisions. There is no way that a 5th grader independently decided that we are evil, that was taught.
Glad to be here, MOgirl

Here's a big lesson. If you have friends you want to keep, never discuss religion or politics with them if you know you can't change their minds. It's not worth losing the friendship over.
