Too bad you couldn't just agree to disagree. But the losing person is often unwilling to just live and let live.

Sorry for the loss.

my dad became a Michael Moore-on. Believes it all. Before the election I told him it was clear Bush would win decisively, that he was closing in on 300 electoral votes and that Daschle would near certainly lose because the left had become so hateful and vitriolic. He thought such speculation was so proposterous he could only presume that I had become indoctrinated by some weird cult or something. After the election he sent me a picture of a campus in Florida that Michael Moore was at on election day noting "looks like Jeb stole the election again for Dubya" and I wrote back not to worry, that Michael Moore had been at that school and, at the time, he was interviewed there on MSNBC and, given the errant exit polls led him to believe there was nothing to worry about, he proclaimed that everything there was fine and everybody got to vote, etc. but that I'd warned about the left going so overboard as to have endangered Daschle. I noted that was ok, though, because, given all the hatred they'd espoused, the Republicans did pretty good again, picking up more house seats and another handful of senate seats ... (which must have been particularly painful because he'd previously told me the DemoncRAT Senatorial Committee was his favorite "charity")

Same situation here. I think it is a case of unwillingness
to admit or recognize the fact the Democratic Party is NOT what it was 25 years ago. Plus, one of us watches CBS/ABC while the other watches little other than FoxNews.
We've learned not to get carried away when discussing politics. Especially, NO NAME CALLING. <>g<>

There absolutely is a cultural divide in this country and the other side is obsessively hateful towards us. I only can hope that means the other side thinks they're going to keep on losing.

I have experienced their hate at meals when they thought that everyone there was a leftist-bot. They are intolerant and scary. I think of them as the new Nazis. Not the gun toters but the civillian followers.

They confessed to my daughter that they have lied to their son in law and daughter and said they were voting for Kerry because they could not bear the fury and anger.

That is really sick. At least my family knows where I stand, although we can't discuss it.

In addition to my liberal parents, my 27-year-old daughter and her husband are both tree-huggers. A lot of that is my fault because I didn't come to my senses until the klintoon reign of lies. At least she will try to rationally discuss issues with me. We have agreed to disagree, but thank God I still have a relationship with her.

Many liberals are too narrow-minded and unforgiving and will readily give up friendships and blood relationships before they will subject themselves to what they know deep down inside is the truth.

I thank God every day that I had my eyes open wide enough to see the lies and deceit of the left.

It's not being a friend when you're the only one who makes an effort to maintain the friendship, that's being a lackey. Hopefully your friend will someday realize that what you had in common was more important than what you didn't.

It makes it even harder when they are relatives. Then you can't "break up".

Same here. My Sis is a teeth-bared, nostrils-flaring liberal who is (according to my Mom) depressed and angry about the election. Politics aside, Sis is one of the best, smartest, and most caring people I know and I love her dearly, so I haven't called her since the election. She would have done the same for me had it gone the other way.

I'm going to let another week or so pass and give her a chance to "process", then will call to chat, but most definitely NOT discuss the election. If she brings it up, I'm going to invoke the family's "polite society" rule: "Three things are not discussed in polite society: politics, religion, and sexual proclivities."

Oh man, I know the feeling! I am dreading going to my mothers for our annual Thanksgiving party/meal. The rest of my rather large and extended family are Democrats, some more liberal than others, but the most vocal ones are, of course, the most rabid liberal Bush haters.

I have not seen them all together since quite some time before Election day, so I don't know what to expect. From the little time that I have been able to spend with a few of them, I know they are bitter, and can hardly help making some kind of derogatory remarks about the President. It will be tough for me to shutup, as it usually is. I have found that humour goes a long way, however.

I don't wish him any harm like apparently some on the left wish upon us.

We are dealing with people who are unmoored from their values and roots.

Although I have read that Hoover's suggestions for ending the depression were not so different from those advocated by FDR, very big gov't.

She didn't even have a framework for that throught.

If she would just lay down her blind hatred that is nothing more than years of brainwashing, she would begin to think a little more clearly and rationally. It's similar to coming off of substance abuse.

It seems as if it is usually the leftist in these politically-mixed friendships who are the ones who can not resist injecting the political differences. I think Conservatives are generally just more polite (although not always, to be fair) and more inclined to take people as a whole package rather than just dwell on the political dimension. I had several friends of many years standing who I no longer communicate with because of their reaction to 9-11. No dramatic arguments, just a fading away of the relationship. Sad, but we can live with this when we know we are right.

And I will live with it. But it is such a waste to see such a one dimension perspective.

Is there any way you all can avoid talking about politics?

She didn't want to. I dont think there will be any more conversations. She is pretty rigid.

Try being a vegan Republican who dates a black woman. Nobody knows what to do with me.

We "lost" my in-laws (in their 80s) to Kerry this year. It'll be a grim Thanksgiving...

Smile, talk about the weather and the food and saw your turkey.

I have a nephew who questions how I can go to church with "blood on our (Republicans) hands", citing talk radio and Waco (that's rich!). Oklahoma City and 911.
Can't talk to him much at all anymore.
