One Gulp, And Bush Was Gone (Sidney Blumenthal)
The Guardian (UK) ^ | Thursday, November 25, 2004 | Sidney Blumenthal

Posted on 11/25/2004 7:43:59 AM PST by an amused spectator

At the dedication of the Clinton library last week in Little Rock, Karl Rove and President Bush received separate tours of the dramatic building, a glistening silver, suspended boxcar filled with light and with a panoramic view of the Arkansas river. Flung across the river stands an old railroad bridge - and to Clinton watchers, bridges represent "the bridge to the 21st century", the former president's re-election slogan in 1996...[snip]

...Then, when the presidents were announced, Bush tried to push his way past Clinton at the library door to be first in line, against the already accepted protocol for the event, as though the walk to the platform was a contest for alpha male...[snip]

...According to two eyewitnesses, Rove had shown keen interest in everything he saw, and asked questions, including about costs, obviously thinking about a future George W Bush library and legacy. "You're not such a scary guy," joked his guide. "Yes, I am," Rove replied. Walking away, he muttered deliberately and loudly: "I change constitutions, I put churches in schools ..." Thus he identified himself as more than the ruthless campaign tactician; he was also the invisible hand of power, pervasive and expansive, designing to alter the fundamental American compact...[snip]

They are losing their minds over this. They really believe GWB is paving the way for a new fundamentalist government and a new dark ages is upon us, stunting all technological growth.

I think to truly understand the mindset, you would have to be a "victim" of the notheastern mindset.

I grew up in the northeast, and if you came from a home setting that did not teach you the basic fundmantals--it is very easy to fall prey to all the sick, twisted teachings of the state.

I grew up believing--the military was bad and everyone in it was brainwashed, abortion was a right and something to be practiced without any regard, most religious people where scary, how lucky I was to be so much more enlightened than the rest of the rednecks that inhabited the country...I could go on and on.

But, you catch my drift? Leaving the NE, living outside of the country, my rebelous nature and the internet all aided me and opened my eyes.

Important to point out, I never considered myself liberal, I was always considered conservative and yet, I believed all or most of those things to one degree or another.

Can't blame anyone for getting out of there. Who needs the "crabs"?

"A shining trailor on a hill."

"It looks like a mobile home on stilts!"

Instead of "Hail to the Chief", did they play "Dueling Banjos"?

Sidney Blumenthal doesn't like George W. Bush very much, does he?

Could it be that George Bush didn't like Bill Clinton very much, or didn't like the fact protocol forced him to be there?

I like the way Bush was portrayed in this article, and that is why Red America voted for him!

Almost as fun as a fly on the wall in Michael Moore's house.

If this anecdote is true, Karl Rove is obviously a quick-witted bloke. It's too bad Clinton Kool-Aid drinker Sid Blumenthal and the rest of the Democrats had their sense of humor surgically removed at birth.

And she has a damned good chance of winning.

I think the lamestream media shot its wad in the 2004 election.

The actuarial tables and a Democrat media in ruins dooms the Hillary! bid in 2008, but she doesn't know it yet.

Yeah, clintbilly and cartbilly were prime examples of former presidents showing "protocol" during the past 4 years.

Don't confuse The Squid with the facts. ;-)

a "victim" of the notheastern mindset.

abortion was a right
most religious people where scary,

I agree. After moving to the MW I found that the "Bible Belt" wasn't nearly as nutty as the place I came from.

Blumenthal appears to have graduated from the same pseudo journalism school that Jayson Blair came from. Both of them take their wet dreams and try make them into an article or oped.

Ya just gotta shake your head...

But I think Clinton will try to do something international to bolster up his tarnished image.

He already did. Doncha remember the CUBAN cigar?

Upon entering the tent, Bush, according to an eyewitness, told an aide: "One gulp and we're out of here."

And if Bush had stuck around, Sid would be whining about how he wasn't really welcome there and was only trying to steal Clinton's spotlight.

Walking away, he muttered deliberately and loudly: "I change constitutions, I put churches in schools ..."

I'd bet my house that's a lie.>>

I would take the bet. These people are so stupid, and take themselves so seriously, they don't even recognize when they are being mocked. Rove would have to add the phrase "and we roast babies in the White House basement and eat them" for these nimrods to realize they are the butt of a joke.

A grand entrance, but it's still bridge to nowhere!

The thing looks like a mobile home but, as always, Sid sounds like a schoolgirl with a crush on Billy.

Your mouth drops open when you read this piece. I was still trying to find coherence when the piece ended...

If not made up most certainly sarcasm, given the "you're not so bad" comment.

Of course. Rove was just having a bit of fun with the 'rats.
