Wisconsin Hunter Murders Show Need For Effective Assault Weapons Ban—Armed Hunters No Match For SKS Assault Rifle
President Has Power to Fully Ban Import of All Foreign-Made Assault Rifles Such as SKSs And AK-47s
Washington, DC—SKS assault rifles like the one reported to have been used to murder five hunters and wound three others in Wisconsin over the weekend are a primary threat to police, the Violence Policy Center (VPC) reported today. So far in 2004, at least six law enforcement officers have been slain by SKSs. In the wake of the shooting, the VPC called on President George W. Bush today to use the Administration's executive authority over firearm imports to fully ban the import of all foreign-made assault rifles. Such an action would not require Congressional approval. The Bush Administration has specifically authorized the importation of SKS assault rifles from both Yugoslavia and Albania.
"Armed hunters were no match for one person firing an SKS assault rifle," said Kristen Rand, VPC legislative director. "This sad incident illustrates why the SKS is also a leading cop-killing rifle in America today."
Rand pointed out that the SKS assault rifle was not covered by the recently expired 1994 federal assault weapons ban. The VPC criticized the 1994 law as inadequate and favors enactment of a tougher version of the law that would ban the SKS and many other assault weapons that easily slipped through the old law's loopholes.
"Even though the 1994 law was easily circumvented by the gun industry, Congress has failed to move on a strong replacement law. President Bush could, with the stroke of a pen, tighten the import ban and stop the import of all foreign-made assault rifles," Rand said.
She noted that both the President's father, former-President George H.W. Bush, and former-President William J. Clinton stopped the import of hundreds of thousands of assault weapons by using their executive authority under firearms import and trade laws. Under the current Bush Administration, specific foreign-made assault rifles, including some SKSs, have returned to the marketplace.

I'd be more afraid of a 30.06 than an SKS. Maybe that's just me, but the 30.06 is a pretty powerful rifle.

My father gave me a 30.06. I only put about 7 rounds through it. It's been in the case ever since. 8). He had a Weatherby, can't remember but I think it was at least a 270.
I put about 10 rounds through a friend's SKS about 12 years ago. It was louder and kicked a bit more than I liked but a lot of people like 'em.
The official police report is contradictory about what kind of gun it was...its says a "Saiga SKS"....of which there is no such thing.
Saiga, a Russian company, makes a hunting version of the (semi-auto) AK47. Looks just like a typical hunting rifle, except takes a special clip.
SKS rifles--a WWII design--were Commie military issue guns and haven't been made in many years.
The gun is EITHER an SKS or a Saiga.... yet before its confirmed what it is, the gun grabbers are already blabbers.

All except one of the hunters that were shot were unarmed when they were murdered.
I would put money on the fact that every one of the hunters were hunting with a firearm that was more powerful than the 7.62X39 cartridge that the SKS shoots.

If THAT is the justification for banning it, then there will be no end to calling for one or another rifle to be banned until they are all gone -- for after the first one on the list is gone, then the second leading-cop killing rifle becomes "the leading cop-killing rifle in America today." And the VPC will call for it to be banned as an evil sniper rifle.
There is no way to please these folks and no end to their agenda until all firearms are banned. Don't think just because you own a hunting rifle you are exempt from being in their crosshairs. They have a bead on you too.

We need the SKS rifles. If we outlaw them, they'll fall in the hands of criminals and terrorists. Gun control fails for the same reason that campaign finance reform fails: money will always find a way. We need to fight this.
This was plain old cold-blooded murder. It had less to do with what he had in his hands than the fact that he wanted to kill and others probably just wanted to get out of there alive.

This is the heart of the matter. The hunters that were murdered approached this killer's territory with wide-eyed naivete, not realizing or considering that they were entering harm's way. They were easy targets for a determined killer. It wouldn't matter at all what rifle the killer was using if the hunters weren't prepared to take him out as cold-bloodedly as he waxed all of them. This is the problem with the idea of using a firearm for self defense. Having a gun means nothing for self defense if you're not prepared to use it. The hunters that were iced didn't realize what they were up against and didn't have the will to kill that their opponent had.

yeah, it was hard on my shoulder too. I didn't shoot many rifles so I definitely wasn't used to it. One time didn't get the butt of the rifle planted properly, looked through the scope with my shooting glasses and...squeezed

We simply don't know what happened out there. Were they threatening/intimidating/provoking the shooter? Who protects the lone individual from gang/mob mentality? The government? Freedom of gun ownership is not there for hunting purposes; it is a fundamental right in the Bill of Rights so that individual freedom is more than mere words but is real backed up by the power of a weapon.
Please go to this link, the guy's statement to the police is on the top of the page. Read it...and spread it around. What he did, and admitted to, was murder.

After reading the police report there is no doubt that Vang is a treacherous murderous lying dog and need's execution (along with his 2 accomplices) ASAP.

3) The "National Firearms Act" of 1934 is hereby repealed.

Theres something odd about this entire story. The original story was that he had an SKS with with a 20rd "clip". The story then came out that it wasnt an SKS, it was a Saiga 7.62x39, the problem with the story then is that I dont believe there is such a creature as a 20 rd Saiga 7.62x39 magazine. Normally the Saiga 7.62x39 takes a 10rd magazine which would mean that if he fired 20 shots as I saw claimed elsewhere then he reloaded with a fresh mag. If he had the 30rd mag or a larger modified AK mag (30,40,55,75,100rd) then why is a 20rd being reported?
