WEB GURU NEEDED
By Michelle Malkin   ·   November 28, 2004 02:13 PM
Reader Michael S. Sanders asks if he is "the only one who cannot download any of your graphics on your site." No, Michael, you are not the only one. It's a pretty common problem, unfortunately. Is there anyone out there who can help? If so, my e-mail address is malkin@comcast.net.

I didn't have any problem. I just went to her web site as linked above, rightclicked on the picture of Ronald Reagan, and downloaded it to my desktop as a jpg file.

Alternatively, you can rightclick on it, select Copy, and then Paste the picture into some suitable program on your computer. For instance, paste it into an MS Word document and then print it.

Perhaps the problem is already fixed, I had no problem saving images on her website to my desktop.

A good example: your post appeared totally blank on my screen. I scanned it with the cursor and three blue cubes appeared in the left margin. I right-click on each of these, choose "view image" and the image appears in another window. This does not happen with Internet Explorer, but I am using Firefox. (PS: I know there are four pictures of Michelle --thank you for that!-- because I can see them when I use the IE browser. Firefox shows only three.)

Anybody got a fix?

I didn't have any problem either, but apparently she's been getting a lot of complaints from people who have, hence her request for assistance.

It's possible that the problems are due to specific circumstances that aren't shared by you or I, and would be best addressed by a website / network specialist.

My hope is that any Freepers who eat, breath, and sleep Hex code, think that optimizing a Unix firewall is something so simple that you wonder why it isn't taught in Kindergarten and have tweaked their home computers to interface with a human transporter peripheral might consider contacting Michelle and rescue a damsel in distress :-)

I'm using firefox 1.0 on nt and I can see all 4 images of, well, the babe. You might hit refresh and see what happens - maybe the image/computer wasn't available for a short period of time. (can also see all 4 images in ie on nt). fyi.

Could be the problem is temporary overloads on the server. When a bunch of people from FR all go over there at once, it could put a strain on it.

Evidently it's not Firefox. Maybe overload, maybe something in Lancer's security settings?

I'm running Windows XP SP2, but I've tweaked some of my security settings since installing SP2.

I tried copying and printing an article from her website once and it cut off about 10% of the right hand side.

This sounds like a problem not with her website, but with the formatting as it appears in your browser.  A couple of easy fixes to consider:  Select (highlight) the text you want to print, right click, select Print, select "Print Selection", Print.  This way, only the Selected text will print, eliminating the web page structures that are interfering with the formatting.

Alternatively, you can Select the text, then copy and past it into any word processor application, where you can optimize the formatting to your own needs.

General tips & tricks:

When encountering a problem with a website, the first (and easiest) thing a visitor can try is to hold down the SHIFT key, while clicking Refresh/Reload. This forces the browser to reload the page, ignoring the browser cache.

Alternatively, a visitor to a site may want to delete their browsers' cache files, and try the page again.

Remember, once a website page loads, what you're viewing is actually on your hard drive, in your browsers' cache.

For those people who can see graphics on Michelle's site, but not save them to HD, I strongly suspect the problem is on their end, and is not a problem with Michelles' site.

I'm not so sure. I can view the site with Netscape 7.01 (Mozilla), and see the images fine.

However, just for grins, I hit the site with Off By One, and all images on the site appear as broken links, i.e. red "X"s. I then viewed the site with Opera 5, and got no images with that browser as well.

Something is funky with her site. Perhaps her webmaster needs to check it for cross-browser compatibility.

There may be something wrong with her site, but it's not just her site that is not working for me. Any post that contains graphics is a problem for me: the graphics do not show up. I have to do the scan, rightclick, view image, new window routine for every graphic. Not so with IE, it works fine.

Being a normal, healthy, single guy, I empathize with your overarching sentiment but I hasten to alert you to the fact that she is happily married, and has children.

That technicality aside, the problem that many healthy, single men face is that there is, unfortunately, only one Michelle Malkin, and I am not aware of any identical twin being available.  This may be a benefit to human cloning research, as such problems as this may someday be addressed.  :-)

(Note to those with no sense of humor:  this was a JOKE.  I don't support or condone human cloning.  Please set your flamethrowers down, thank you)

You're using Firefox/Mozilla? This may be a dumb question, but have you checked under "Edit > Preferences > Privacy & Security > Images" to see if the "Do not load any images" is checked?

Another blog (allahpundit.com) had a similar problem which was traced to browsers on machines that were running Norton Internet Security Professional.

The solution is to add MichelleMalkin.com to "trusted zones" in the "Personal Firewall" properties.

If you would be willing to find a citation to that effect at the Symantec site and forward it to Michelle, I'm sure that she would be very appreciative.

Check the rest of this thread. Several report that Norton is blocking images for some reason, and a special permissive rule is needed. I don't use Norton, and I have no special FF settings here.

maybe something in Lancer's security settings? I'm running Windows XP SP2, but I've tweaked some of my security settings since installing SP2.

I had the problem before installing SP2, which I did this afternoon. The problem still exists. What security settings did you tweak? I turned off the firewall because I use a router. The only other two settings I saw were Automatic Update and Pop-up Blocker for IE, both of which I left on.

Certainly not a dumb question, but under "Edit" on my Firefox, there is no "Preferences." Nor under any other menu.

I'll keep looking. Don't know why your Firefox would have menu items that mine doesn't (did you buy yours? (:-)

I'm running Netscape 7.01 (Mozilla). I haven't gotten around to trying Firefox yet.

According to this Firefox FAQ, the "Load Images" checkbox should be under "Web Features Options".

Got it, thanks to a tip from holymoly!

Go to Tools/Options/Web Features. Check "Load Images" but do NOT check (or uncheck if it is checked) "for the originating Website only."

That fixed the problem. Thanks to all for your help!

Her web server has been setup to prevent hotlinking (posting images loaded from her site on other pages e.g. FreeRepublic). Some browsers (e.g. Firefox and Opera) can be set up to hide the referrer (a privacy thing). These browsers will not see images even on one of here pages because to the web server it looks like they are hotlinking (the referrer is not michellemalkin.com).

The answer is to show images if the referrer is blank as well as when it is michellemalkin.com. This is something her webmaster or web hosting company should be able to help her fix.

UPDATE:

Michelle Malkin

MICHELLEMALKIN.COM GRAPHICS PROBLEMS
By Michelle Malkin   ·   November 29, 2004 04:01 AM
As I noted below, some readers cannot view graphics on my site. Apparently, the culprit is Norton antivirus software (and possibly several other antivirus programs). Reader David Moschetti recommends the following fix for those of you running Norton Internet Security:

1. Click on the Privacy Control option.
2. Select Configure.
3. Select Advanced.
4. Select Add Site.
5. Enter michellemalkin.com.
6. Highlight the michellemalkin.com site by selecting it in the Web Content Options.
7. Deselect all the Use default settings.
8. Set the following options to
a. Information about your Brower = Permit
b. Information about visited sites = Permit
c. Animated images = Permit
d. Scripts = Permit
e. Flash animation = Permit
9. Select Ok
10. Refresh or go to your site and the graphics should appear.

If this doesn't work, please let me know.

Allahpundit (whose site I miss very much) had similar problems earlier this year.

Many, many thanks to all of the readers who responded to my plea for help.

Update: One reader says the fix described above doesn't work. I'd be interested in hearing from others using Norton antivirus software. Others point to their firewalls as the source of the problem. Am opening up comments for further discussion.
