Maria Shriver: Schwarzenegger Won't Be President
Rooters via Yahoo!News ^ | November 29, 2004

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites)'s wife, Maria Shriver, says America may someday amend the U.S. Constitution and elect a foreign-born president -- but it won't be her husband.

"Forget about it. It is not going to happen. The process takes years, and this is as far as it goes," Shriver, the niece of former President John F. Kennedy, told Vanity Fair magazine amid talk of amending the Constitution to allow the Austrian-born film star to run for president.

Shriver also said that despite their political differences -- she is a Democrat, he a Republican -- their marriage was strong and passionate.

"(We're) still engaged with each other, hot for each other, into each other," she said. "There hasn't been a moment when I have been bored. I have worked and worked on my marriage, and it has paid off."

Shriver admitted that stories before Schwarzenegger's election as governor in 2003 about his womanizing were "flat-out tough, painful, no doubt about it."

When interviewer Marie Brenner asked whether a part of her wondered if the stories could be true, Shriver said: "You have to know the person in front of you. You have to be able to separate what your reality is, what other people's perceptions are. .... You have to go on with your life."

Asked how she coped, Shriver said, "I fight. ... You have to struggle in every aspect of your life."

A member of America's most famous political family, the Kennedys, Shriver said that in marrying Schwarzenegger she needed to defy expectations and was glad she did.

"Everyone assumed that I was supposed to marry someone like a John Kerry (news - web sites), some preppy that had gone to Harvard or Yale," she said. "I didn't want to marry those boys. I did not like them. I had been around them my whole life. I interrupted the story line. I wanted out of that suffocation. I wanted someone different. I married my authentic self."

Schwarzenegger told Vanity Fair he understood his wife's need to break away, calling the Shriver family "the clones."

"Everyone in the family thinks exactly the same," he said. "If her mother says it is green, it is green. If her father says it is black, it is black. When you are in the family, you think this is normal, and then you meet someone from the outside and the lights go on. Here was a guy who was free.... If he wants to be a Republican, he is a Republican. If he wants to be a movie star, he is a movie star."

Just remember, an amendment that allows a Schwarznegger to run for prez allows a Soros to do the same.

Pleasant dreams (E.G. Marshall)

Yea so you did the next best thing you married a movie star. Big deal! I can't stand that woman. But at least she knows the truth that he will not get elected president.

Exactly, and neither will any other naturalized citizen.

BTW I am a naturalized citizen and I am totally opposed to this

If a non-native should be allowed to be eligible for the presidency, then why do we limit the lenght for a native born?

How does the whereabouts of your parents at the time of your birth alter your capacity to be POTUS? It would be fair to put a minimum time on citizenship as a qualification for POTUS. That would maintain the intent of the Founding Fathers to limit the ability of foreign governments to manipulate America. BTW, I am a naturalized citizen, and I completely support revising the U.S. Constitution to change the qualifications for POTUS in regards to the happenstance of your birthplace.

Call me crazy, but I was betting that John John would turn Republican.

I always thought it said something about her that she chose to live as far away as possible from her family.

I know she wasn't crazy about dating Arnold in the begining when he first asked her out, but I always thought it was more odd, to come from a family of leftists, and marry somone (who while he is a rino but a partisian rino at least) seems as hard right to them as Tom Delay.

Also, she knows he will not be president, and I think part of her doesn't even want him to run, realize her career is on pretty much screwed right now until he's out of office.

No one born outside the U.S. can fully understand the traditions, laws and dynamics of America. Actually, anyone should be here ten generations before getting any government job at any level, from local to federal. Foreigners: just be grateful you're here.

Naturalized citizen can be Governors. That is plenty enough. They should never be allowed to become POTUS

Perhaps as many years of citizenship as the minimum age of a President.

What party would Soros run in. Democrat? Green? Libertarian? Seems likely he'd be a spoiler to the liberal vote.

Am I the only one here that never liked Maria Shriver?

She reminds me of a smarmy aristocrat with her nose pointed in the air.

Oh Arnold, the things we will do for what we want. Not criticizing. Been there, doing that.
