WASHINGTON (Talon News) -- The White House spoke out Monday against the criticism of Secretary of State nominee Dr. Condoleezza Rice. Since her nomination to become the highest-ranking African-American woman in American history, fourth in line to the presidency, Rice has been the subject of racially charged caricatures and extreme rhetoric.
A Wisconsin radio talk show host, John Sylvester, the program director and morning personality on WTDY-AM in Madison, referred to Rice as "Aunt Jemima" during a broadcast. He told the Associated Press that he used the term to describe Rice and other blacks as having only a subservient role in the Bush administration.
Caricatures of Rice that have appeared recently in the Washington Post and New York Times portray her as a black stereotype. The Washington Post published a Pat Oliphant cartoon that shows her drawn as a parrot with thick protruding lips and buck teeth, repeating President Bush's words back to him.
Gary Trudeau, who draws the "Doonesbury" comic strip features President Bush referring to Rice with the nickname "Brown Sugar."
Members of the black leadership network Project 21 issued a statement condemning the political cartoons that they consider racist as well as liberal groups that are usually outspoken on racial matters.
Mychal Massie said, "The recent racist attacks and mimicry of Condoleezza Rice are infuriating and despicable. Even more insufferable is the deafening silence of the elite liberals."
Michael King, another Project 21 member, said, "To hear the leftists tell it, conservative blacks have become the new 'trash class' of American society. And with the continued cricket-filled silence from the professional civil rights crowd, the Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons give tacit permission and acceptance of such language and tactics."
While not all of the objectionable comments have been racially motivated, they have been no less vitriolic. Newsmax.com reported the comments of White House reporter Helen Thomas who recently called Rice "a monster."
According to Newsmax.com, Thomas, whose career as a White House correspondent stretches back to the Kennedy administration, also said, "That lady is a g*ddamn liar."
White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan commented to Talon News about the cartoons and statements, saying, "What you refer to is totally inappropriate."

What too them so long?
Wow. The Liberal Democrats are unmasked. Shades of the old South and Dixiecrats who stood firmly in the way of desegregation.
Some reporter with cajones had to ask.
The unhinged liberals are not only viciously demonizing Dr. Rice, they are also attacking Hispanics Gonzalez (Attorney General) and Gutierrez (Commerce). They cannot tolerate any minority from succeeding in a Conservative Administration...it goes against their plan to keep minorities dependent on their hand-outs for votes. No, this is the real Democratic party, the Robert Byrd Party who has been disguising itself for decades as the party of minorities and inclusion. They are revolting!

Thank GOD something was finally said.
See #7...he's a FReeper.
"Right-on"
About time. We need to start speaking the truth loud and long - libs are racists in a big way.
This is a golden opportunity to brand the democrats as the party of rascism.
We need to make sure that Jackson and Sharpton do not receive any taxpayer money to their front organizations.
For many many years I would have completely disagreed with you.
But, then along came a man named Bush43. He put a lot of women and a whole number of minorities in his cabinet and other positions of serious power. This should be a time of great rejoicing in America - minorities and women holding such high powered positions and making decisions that will affect their groups. It opens the door by showing business and other parts of society that all of these minority groups are not usless and should not be shunned. And in the end paves the way for creating a stong and unified society.
And since Bush43 has put these great people into these positions in Government, all I have heard from the "left" are serious put downs and slams on the appointed minorities.
I personally find that what has gone with Dr. Rice is absolutely disgusting. I find few even in the press who properly use "Dr" instead of "Ms." when discussing Dr. Rice. They all should be damn ashamed of themselves and I sure hope that one of these days the American people see through what the left has been doing to the minorities in Bush43's cabinet.
I think we all saw this coming in the democratic candidates themselves in the debates when they referred to Cheney's daughter as a "lesbian" in their mean way. They are not the tolerant party they claim to be...
You ***ROCK*** Michael.
Stronger words needed and totally appropriate, IMO.
