Continuing a campaign to overhaul its lesser U.S. cable networks, Discovery Networks U.S. is renaming military-themed Discovery Wings as the Military Channel.
The network is one of the original Discovery digital networks launched in 1998 to soak up some of the shelf space cable systems created when they started compressing part of their signals. Now that distribution of those networks has exceeded 30 million, Discovery is paying more attention to programming and marketing those channels.
The Military Channel adopts the name of a failed cable network that went bankrupt in 1999 and ultimately liquidated its library of military films and trademarks. While Discovery Wings had focused solely on aviation, The Military Channel will broaden its programming to tell more-personal, behind-the-lines stories of servicemen and women and provide deeper explorations of military technology, strategy and history. The revamp will commence Jan. 10.
Just damn.
If you want on the list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...
They've got military themed wallpaper for download at http://wings.discovery.com/convergence/military/wallpaper.html...
Then again, it seems like the Discovery Channel has become the Hot Rod & Motorcycle Channel and the Learning Channel has become The Story Channel (Dating, Baby, Wedding, Makeover, etc.). I haven't watch either channel in ages and used to watch them all the time.
I was the same way -- I've only watched a handful of times in the last couple of years. I guess that's why I'm looking forward to the new Military Channel.
If they do this the right way (and Discovery actually does a decent job with The Science Channel, Discovery Home & FitTV), it ought to be a fun ride...
Shoot, I ditched cable altogether in favor of FreeRepublic and whatever DVDs I rent/buy!
Yeah I mostly watch the History Channel, Science Channel, Discovery Times Channel, and the National Geographic Channel. D-Wings is fairly lame.
The History Channel is pretty much already the Military Channel.
Lots of great stuff and I think the History Channel is improving, but people should really supplement it with reading on their own..a lot of their documentaries are superficial and make errors.
What I love is stock footage being used over and over again because it looks "cool" when it actually has nothing to do with the subject of the documentary.
You'll see a documentary on WWII in the Pacific and they'll show the HMS Barham rolling over and blowing up in the Meditteranean, etc.
Agreed!

I love the History Channel but the number of mistakes they make, both with facts and footage, drives me nuts. The best history teacher I ever had while working on my degree at Texas A&M would always be pointing out the errors on various History Channel shows, even the ones he has been on.
Right now, the best show on the History Channel has to be "Mail Call".

You don't say! I thought it was blown up by flying saucers!
Didn't you see the documentary EARTH Vs THE FLYING SAUCERS?
Imagine Pink TV's offerings.
( s h u d d e r )
SWEET!
The other massively overused stock footage is that Japanese two engine bomber (Betty I presume) on fire crashing in the ocean and the guy on the carrier thrusting his arm in the air.....at least most of the time it's used for Pacific documentaries so it does have something to do with the documentary.
Only channel I watch history Channel A&E Because of American Justice and Discovery Channel if they have something cool
I add it this channel to my Dish network subscription if it was cool
Also I love Animal Planet because Animal cops Detriot
Ditto, Mail Call is awesome, very well done and always has something interesting on it.

Hopefully this will be a good channel, History Channel and Science Channel only have so much programming ><
> ... Discovery Wings ... It is the same shows over and
> over and many are 10-15 years old.
And the Discovery Channel people have finally realized that.
I caught a few minutes of "Secret Allied A/C of WW-II"
tonite, and they're having to resort to inventing motion
imagery of stuff that never existed. The well has run dry,
unless Rutan picks up the pace of inventing the future :-)
MilChan subscribers can now look forward to fewer Wright
Bros. re-runs and more Mail Call reruns :-)
Sounds good, but the History Channel is already covering a lot of that material.
