Actually, there were African-American officers during WW II.

I served under COL Heidi Brown during Operation Iraqi Freedom-she is definitely class-one of the finest officers I have ever served under (male or female). However, the article erroneously describes her as the commander of the 507th Maintenance Company. COL Brown commanded the 507th's parent unit, the 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade.
