o Served as a successful two-term mayor of Lincoln, Nebraska, transforming a large budget deficit into a $15 million budget surplus during his tenure.
o Dedicate $85 million in surplus state sales tax and state income tax dollars for direct property tax relief over two years.
o Reduce the size and cost of the Governors office staff, emphasize e-government and technology applications, and merge the Department of Water Resources and Natural Resources Commission into the new Department of Natural Resources.

Now how is this going to help get more GOP seats in the Senate?
Personally, I'd shut it down. Along with the NEA, DOE, HUD and 16 others. Leave Rummy and company in the Cabinet and kiss the rest goodbye. Sure would be a tremendous cost saving in having people on the payroll who screw up free enterprise, and the USA economy.
It is very simple.
Johanns saw the writing on the wall.
In 2006, we'll be sending Dr. Tom Osborne to the Senate...yes, that Tom Osborne...It is the only reason Johanns would not run for the Senate, because Dr. Osborne is unbeatable in Cornhusker land.
Well! Judging from the article, sounds encouraging, that he's from a dairy farm. As farmers ourselves, we don't think either party has a real strong grasp of agriculture ... it's not only big business, but also a facet of national security. Bureaucrats seem to lose sight of one side or the other.
As far as the NEA goes, yep, that one's kind of a waste. If the work is good, artists can find buyers and sponsors -- and not quit their day jobs until then.

Osborn's going to run for govenor, isn't he? That's what he said recently in an interview. Wants to be home in Nebraska, and not in DC anymore.
Everybody around here keeps saying "give Callahan two more years, and you'll be glad we got him".....I'm not betting on it, you?
Coach Osborn will be the next governor. Johanns was to be the guy to run for Senate to beat the popular dem, Nelson but my people back there say the farmers were not impressed with Johanns. I suppose he could have won due to his popularity in Lincoln-Omaha area but maybe he didn't want to chance it or maybe he wants this more. Nelson would have made a great Sec.
I am. Some people just can't be patient. Since this is the glue that holds all of Nebr together (farmers & ranchers) the people better contribute to the fund to build the new center which will contribute big to recruiting & championships of the future. GBR
Not a chance
Yep. He'll probably run for Governor and Johanns may run for the Senate. Assuming he does he a good job in the next year, Johanns will be nicely positioned to take on Ben Nelson in 2006.
I guess I worded that wrong. I meant that people won't give him the two years. They aren't going to get any better, imo. Not that I think Callahan is that great, just that if they fire him, no one else is going to look at the job as a step up.

Annie,
I'm not sure that Callahan can stay after Solich was chased off after an 8-3 season. But I hope (for the Husker faithful's sake) that he can do better if he does stay...
