Food for the Poor
Woman with babyFood For The Poor (FFP) ministers to spiritually renew impoverished people throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Established in 1982 as a 501(c)(3)corporation, our goals are to improve the health, economic, social and spiritual conditions of the men, women and children we serve.

Food For The Poor raises funds and provides direct relief assistance to the poor, usually by purchasing specifically requested materials and distributing them through the churches and charity organizations already operating in areas of need. In this way, the organization serves the poor with dignity and ensures the most appropriate use of donors' funds.

Our ministry reflects God's unconditional love, which surrenders all, inspires trust and faith, and embraces all people regardless of race, status or creed. We believe that Christ is alive, and that we can best serve Him by being of assistance to those in greatest need (Matthew 25:31-46). Finally, we stress the need for regular prayer to guide and maintain the purity of our mission.

FFP seeks to link the church of the First World with the church of the Third World in a manner that aids both the materially and spiritually poor. We empower the poor in spirit through our direct ministry of teaching, encouragement and prayer. Ultimately, we aspire to bring benefactors, recipients and ourselves to a closer union with our Lord.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Inspired by the example of St. Vincent de Paul, our patron, and Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, our founder, last year, our 70,000 members assisted over 13,728,577 persons throughout the United States. Our Twinning and Disaster Programs brought help to many more all over the globe. Most of that assistance was through the direct, personal encounters of our members, seeking in friendship, to bring whatever assistance could be provided. In 2003, that help amounted to nearly $254,051,113.

Personal request: MUSTARD SEED PROJECT
This is sponsored by one of my best friend's church. She and I and several others are teaming up to sponsor a little girl in Uganda by the name of Beyeza (born in 1999). Her mother died, and her father was unable to care for her, and so she has been with the mission.

I would truly be most greatful for any help from fellow freepers. They ask for $25 a month, but seeing as all of us donating so far are poor college students, we just chip together whatever we can. :p

There's no website, but you can make checks out to "Mustard Seed" and mail them to:
The Blessed Mustard Seed Babies Home
1808 36th St., SE
Rio Rancho, NM 87124
(505) 892-2818

If you choose to give to Mustard Seed, please freepmail me how much you give so that I know how we are doing. Thank you. :)

If you want more information and/or if you would like a photo of her, freepmail me and I'll do my best to oblige you.

A good list of Christian Charities: http://www.csoa.org/Charity1.htm

And of course, don't forget to donate to FreeRepublic!: https://secure.freerepublic.com/donate/

If you are perhaps interested in helping me maintain this list, here is the todo list: update charities form comments; alphabatize; divide into subsection ("Political" "Christian" "Homeless" etc.; add more donate links; better descriptions; include links to relative information for each charity. By my lonesome, all that is going to take a while. :p

While not a charity, I suggest that Free Republic get some extra donations for the holiday season. I guess another quarterly fundraiser is coming up soon and would it be something if enough money was collected before it even got started! I believe that the last fundraiser ended in record time.

I'm sure all these organizations are worthy, but isn't it a little presumptuous to call them "Freeper" charities? How about "ExplodingSpleen Charities"?

Well, I was asking for everyone to post their suggestions to the end of incorporating them all into the list. And even a good half of these already posted were recommended by freepers in other threads.

The issue of worthwhile charities has come up pretty much everytime there is another story about the United Way or some such charity being evil, which is what gave me the idea that it might be nice to have a more permanent reference available. :)
