Ex-Mexico president's brother found dead

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Enrique Salinas, the youngest brother of former Mexican president Carlos Salinas de Gortari, was found dead in a car on the outskirts of Mexico City on Monday, with a plastic bag tied over his head in an apparent murder, officials said.

Authorities said there indications that Salinas had been killed as part of an attempt to extort him or get information out of him.

"Generally, if you put a bag over someone's head, you're often not trying to kill them, but rather extort them or get some information out of them," said Alfonso Navarrete Prida, the attorney general of the State of Mexico, which abuts Mexico City and where the body was found.

Enrique had long maintained a low profile, in contrast to the stormy lives of two of his brothers. Raul Salinas is serving a prison sentence of nearly 27 years for masterminding the murder of his former brother-in-law.

Carlos Salinas is widely hated in Mexico because of the economic collapse that immediately followed his 1988-1994 administration. Raul Salinas has been investigated for alleged corruption and money laundering during his brother's administration.

Enrique and a fourth brother, Sergio, stayed out of the spotlight, dedicating themselves to business activities - though their business were investigated by European and Mexican officials, with no charges ever brought against them.

"We was found in the seat of the car with a plastic bag over his head," Navarrete Prida said, adding, "this investigation will be pursued to the fullest extent of the law."

Carlos Salinas was back in Mexico in the 2000 promoting a book where he claimed to defend his innocence. The visit went mostly without news and faded away. My personal guess is that he was interested on the ongoing electoral campaign.

AFAIK he went back on Ireland; but some G' searches locate him at Cuba. I'm mostly sure he's not at México right now.

if memory serves, the PRI devalued the peso back in the early 1980's (i was in el paso at the time). the middle class had been moving up and expanding in mexico, and many had dollar accounts (in mexico) which were frozen by the government and their value fixed at a ridiculously low number.

the for once prospering middle class, which at least on the northern border states was starting to donate money in a big way to the PRI competition PAN (a joke at the time), was again thrown back and their savings made worthless.

a really cruel joke by the PRI -- this put some el paso business in a tail-spin for years...

they know what they're doing. the dozen or so billionaires + the manorial class had moved their pesos to safe havens outside mexico.

the 1994 devaluation devastated mexico.

Looks like Carlos pissed off some of the major Mexican drug lords.

Suicide came first to my mind.

Yes. Suicide. First he slit his throat, then he pumped 12 rounds into his own body, then he took his mangled body and hung it from a rafter on a rope, then in a final act of desperation, tied a plastic bag over his head.

I hate when that happens.

Recipe for Mexican Justice.
Secure the arms and legs.
Secure an air-tight plastic bag over the head.
Inject insecticide into the bag.
>> This is generally a Columbian Cartel reward for disloyalty.

I stand somehow corrected: Carlos was at 21:05 yesterday on the funerary (Acude Carlos Salinas a la funeraria).

Yeah, it was silly to say "right now".

Carlos Salinas de Gortari --- also the signer and promoter of NAFTA which destroyed the livelihood of millions of Mexicans. Credit him and Fox with the deaths of their desperate citizens trying to get out by being stuffed into unventilated boxcars and semitrailers.

He has been in the US a few times. I often wonder why the Bush family insists on kissing his ass.

The only thing the Mexican elite cares about is money --- I wonder if Carlos will miss Enrique anymore than he missed the brother-in-law killed by Raul.

Navarrete Prida said, adding, "this investigation will be pursued to the fullest extent of the law."

Saying something like that guarantees a bigger mordida is all. We're letting this government dictate our immigration policies and homeland security --- giving their own identification papers as they please.

carlos salinas gotari .....

Only thing you omitted is he was fave of the NAFTA/open borders loving Wall Street Journal. Was even on their board of directors IIRC> Until he was exposed as a thieving scumbag placing his bribes and skims into overseas accounts. Then the WSJ couldn't put enough distance between them and him

it's a strange group of people.

hard to wrap your brain around because, unless you're a psychopath, you have some feelings for other people.

the pri does not.

no doubt in my mind that it is evil. how else do you describe a country where there is little social cohesiveness? no mechanisms for self improvement. whenever someone or something raises its head, it gets shot down, literally.

the government of mexico is a terrorist government. against its own people.

and, it's coming back, the pri, -- after an interlude of el presidente fox's "democracy".

Your absolutely right about the old 7-up method. Been a 'fav' for years because it's cheap and low tech. Guaranteed to make you confess to what you did NEXT Thursday. But it's designed to extract a confession that can be used in court against a live defendant.

The plastic bag over the head is for when they want the interogee to realize they are deadly serious and that he won't survive the interrogation anyway. It's a 'last rites' kinda thing.
