OSLO, December 7, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Kenyan Nobel peace prize winner, Mrs. Wangari Maathai, said "abortion is wrong," in a conversation with Norway's Dagen newspaper reporter Jostein Sandsmark Tuesday. Professor Maathai is Kenya's deputy minister of the environment.
"But I am trying to avoid condemning the victim," she said, referring to the pregnant mother who seeks an abortion. She sees both mother and child as casualties: "Both are victims. There is no reason why anybody who has been conceived, shouldn't be given the opportunity to be born and to live a happy life. The fact that a life like that is terminated, is wrong," said Maathai.
"When we allow abortion, we are punishing the women -- who must abort their children because their men have run away -- and we are punishing the children whose life is terminated," she continued. "But it is because we are not willing to put the men where they should be, and that is taking up the responsibility."
"I want us to step back a little bit and say: Why is this woman and this child threatened? Why is this woman threatening to terminate this life? What do we need to do as a society? What are we not doing right now as a society? A part of that answer lies in this House," Maathai said, pointing at the Kenyan Parliament building.
While abortion is still illegal in Kenya, Maathai suggests going further -- that the 1960s law making fathers financially responsible for any children they conceive be re-instated.
"That law was removed by men in this Parliament," she emphasized. "Now I think we are too lenient on men. We have almost given them a license to father children and not worry about them. That is part of the reason why women abort, because they do not want to be burdened with children whose fathers do not want to become responsible."
Maathai will be awarded the Nobel prize in Oslo Friday for her involvement in fighting for the environment, human rights and women's rights.

She must not understand the rules.
People who win Nobel Prizes are required to be anti-life, pro-abort leftist who think it's society's fault for not handing out enough condoms.
To think, she actually condemns abortion and calls for men to take responsibility for their actions.
Obviously, TPTB need to rethink awarding her the prize and consider giving it to someone who understands what they are required to do while in the spotlight.
The men-blaming is a turn-off, but she's right about abortion just being plain wrong.

People, citing this woman on your side of the argument is almost grounds to dismiss it immediately. This is the same woman who basically said something like the United States(or maybe some other western power) created aids to make genocide on africans so we could take their land. She's not all there in the head.
Unfortunately, this woman is an idiot.
He'd better watch saying politically incorrect things before the money is in his hands. They will rescind.

I know she believes some crackpot theory about HIV, but so do 95% of the people on this forum.
HIV: a virus that can't be isolated, doesn't hurt people who aren't medicated against it, has the epidemiology of toxin-exposure and kills by liver-damage in 90% of cases? Don't know about you, but I'm convinced.
And now, 20 years after the "discovery" of HIV we have a new brandname. Call it "HIV-lite". Hepatitus-C: a virus that can't be isolated, doesn't hurt people who aren't medicated against it, has the epidemiology of toxin-exposure and kills by liver-damage. Umm.
Good for her. I've followed her career peripherally for many years and was tickled she got the prize. Her anti-Bush comments earned her a spot on my "not a favorite anymore" list, however.

I'll go one step further - when couples seek in-vitro fertilization and whip up a whole batch of embryos, they should be made to sign a statement that they are financially responsible for raising every last one of them to adulthood.
The scientists/doctors involved should also have to sign this (because, in this case, with doctors involved, you have a LOT of people involved in what used to be a two-person tango).
The way I see it, there is only one victim - the baby. It was the mother's choice. ... no harm done to her...
Yesterday a a male coworker of mine confided in me that he had a terrible problem and felt horrible inside. He told me his young wife of three months went ahead and aborted their twins without even so much as talking to him first. She was "almost to the point in her pregnancy where it was too late" he said. The pain in his face was heart wrenching. Honestly I was lost for words. Not only that but his mother told him he had killed her grandchild (not knowing there were two). He wanted those children even though they are struggling to make ends meet. She said they couldn't afford them. I guess all we can do is pray for those two little angles. It's just so sad.
