Televised report shocks business owner
http://www.tonganoxiemirror.com/section/frontpage_lead/story/7123 ^

Last Wednesday night, Bill McGraw stayed up past his bedtime to watch the 10 o'clock news on KCTV Channel 5.

What the 80-year-old Tonganoxie farmer thought he'd see was an interesting feature that mentioned his longstanding fertilizer business.

Instead, he saw a broadcast that wrongly depicted McGraw's business as an irresponsible company that would sell ammonium nitrate -- in huge quantities -- to anyone who came along.

I smell lawsuit. And a well deserved one at that. This goes well beyond "responsible journalism" into the realm of slander and libel.

If anyone thinks we can secure something as common as fertilizer and diesel fuel so that terrorists can't get their hands on it they must be dreaming.

Even if we "tighten down" this industry a terrorist who can't figure out how to get the stuff is probably to stupid to remember that when his feet sweat then the fuses won't light in his sneakers......

If I lived within 100 miles of this man, he's the one I'd buy my fertilizer from.

In today's journalism industry, the story ALWAYS trumps facts.

Hmmmm, kinda reminds me of the people that vote 'democrat'.

Does that mean that Scotts is a terrorist organization using Home Depot, Lowes, and home & garden supply outlets everywhere as fronts? Maybe it is absence of malice but it sure isn't absence of ignorance.

This guy is going to nail the TV station if he hires a halfway competent lawyer. This was a journalistic assassination.

That gets excused, unfortunately, in our political system, but it won't get uncompensated in the business and private sector.

I totally agree with your post #11. I hope Bill McGraw is joined by Scotts, etc. in a humongous lawsuit against Channel 5 TV. What a bunch of idiots they are.

So is the guy going to go after gas station owners who are selling the diesel as well?

For it to explode you need ammonium nitrate with a minimum of 32% nitrogen, no phosphate or potash. Most fertilizer is "prilled" that is pelletized and then coated with clay. This prevents the ammonium nitrate (hygroscopic) from absorbing moisture from the air and caking into a solid mass. It also acts as a "time release" for the fertilizer that helps prevent burning the plants. When ammonium nitrate is prilled it also fails to absorb diesel fuel and thus it is useless as an explosive. It is possible to remove the clay by dissolving the ammonium nitrate in absolute alcohol, separating and then evaporating the solvent but that is a process you might use for ounces not hundreds of pounds.

The short of it; news article is BravoSierra!

GtG

Seems like this tv station is making a story and slandering this old man. Time for him to "lawyer-up" and take it to this station.

dissolving the ammonium nitrate in absolute alcohol, separating and then evaporating the solvent...

Now if you could lay your hands on some anhydrous hydrazine, and used that instead, you could filter out the clay and use the finished liquid product directly. This would be "Astro-Lite" the most powerful non nuclear explosive available.

Beware of the fumes when mixing the ammonium nitrate and the anhydrous hydrazine, the gas can kill you.

So endith todays lesson.

GtG

"Ammonium nitrate," said KCTV 5 reporter Dave Helling. "It's a cheap and common fertilizer and when mixed with diesel fuel in the right proportions ... it could cause an explosion."

"Water. It's a cheap and common hydration substance, but when released in large enough quantities, whole cities can flood. ... It could kill women and babies."

I guess we need to restrict the sale of bottled water to just those with government-issued permits.
