Pope Condemns Same Sex Union as Attack on Society
Yahoo News ^ | December 18, 2004

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope John Paul (news - web sites) on Saturday condemned same sex marriage as an attack on the fabric of society and called on Catholics to combat what he said was aggressive attempt to legally undermine the family.

"Attacks on marriage and the family, from an ideological and legal aspect, are becoming stronger and more radical every day," the 84-year old pontiff said in the unusually strong statement.

"Who destroys this fundamental fabric causes a profound injury to society and provokes often irreparable damage."

The Catholic Church teaches that marriage between a man and a women is sacred and that homosexuality is a sin.

That stance has been under pressure in some of its core constituencies, including the United States and Catholic Spain where the socialist government in October approved a controversial draft law to legalize gay unions.

But a counterattack has begun. In the United States, President Bush (news - web sites) was swept back to power in the November elections with help from U.S. evangelicals and Catholics who agree with the Pope.

Votes for Bush included solid support from the religious right and his win was interpreted by some as a victory for conservative Christians on issues like gay rights and abortion.

The Polish Pope on Saturday also condemned abortion, artificial procreation and equal status for cohabiting couples as undermining the marital state.

"These things that are presented as civilized progress or scientific conquests, in many cases are in fact a defeat for the dignity of human life and for society," his statement read.

Vatican Document On Homosexual Unions

“Homosexual unions are totally lacking in the biological and anthropological elements of marriage and family which would be the basis, on the level of reason, for granting them legal recognition. Such unions are not able to contribute in a proper way to the procreation and survival of the human race. The possibility of using recently discovered methods of artificial reproduction, beyond involving a grave lack of respect for human dignity,(15) does nothing to alter this inadequacy.”
CONSIDERATIONS REGARDING PROPOSALS TO GIVE LEGAL RECOGNITION TO UNIONS BETWEEN HOMOSEXUAL PERSONS

Of course it is. The pope sure didn't help W much in this election. The pope would rather show sympathy with faux catholics like kerry.

??? More practicing catholics voted for Bush than Kerry. The pope did not 'endorse' Kerry ... not sure where you come up with your comment.

The pope whined and whined about Iraq during the election. What a hypocrit, since we helped him with poland.

Now that he has chosen his battles poorly ( he fell into the same moral equivalence trap that he said he loathes wrt Iraq)
, he now finds god written out of the euro constitution and the place run over by homos and all the diseases that they carry.

The Pope must be reading Dennis Prager's good stuff:

I wish catholic bashers would stop posting their negeative remarks concerning our pope. Catholics on this site don't post negative comments about your religions. Catholics have alot of negative thoughts concerning other christine religions, yet they don't openly express them. Please have some class.

Is this the same Pope that kisses the Koran ???

He once did kiss the Koran as a sign of respect for another faith during a meeting with some Muslim clerics. That's unfortunate. And, I imagine he regards it as an error. But, to say he "kisses the Koran" is wrong. It's not something he makes a practice of.

The pope is quite Catholic and he kisses the Holy Bible.

Homosexual Agenda Overlapping Moral Absolutes Ping.

(let me know if anyone wants on/off/back on either list!)

The Pope is being very clear about what is right, what is wrong, and I also like what he says here:

"These things that are presented as civilized progress or scientific conquests, in many cases are in fact a defeat for the dignity of human life and for society."

Just because something CAN be done, doesn't mean it SHOULD be done. Science (or any human endeavor), if not restrained by morality, can create great evil.
