"Zoubeida is believed to have helped plan the Strasbourg attack, which was foiled when German police carried out raids in Frankfurt on December 25, 2000, following a tip-off from French intelligence.

Police seized chemicals, detonators and a surveillance video of the proposed site for the attack, the Strasbourg market which is a major tourist attraction in the eastern French city."

It appears from the article that the Strasbourg attack would have been Al Qaeda's declaration of war on France some 10 months before the September 11th strike made on the WTC. With what they found to thwart the Strasbourg plot, and all other evidence, where was the French and German intelligence pre US 9-11, what did they know and not share? Also was Interpol contacted? I imagine they were. Still not a whisper from Europe until now, 4 years later!

A little twist here, but have either of you - or anyone else - visited both Paris and Rome? If so, which did you like visiting more and why? Thanks.

Never been to either city. Spent two weeks in the south of France (Mont Blanc area) a few years back, but never touched down in Italy. From my short stay I concluded that France was a beautiful country that, unfortunately, was overrun by......the French.

I'm going to one, but can't decide which. Yeah, I don't like the French, but I'd love to see Notre Dame and the other historical sites. On the other hand, Rome has the Vatican and many great old basilicas and cathedrals and lots of history also.

Another reason I'm interested in Paris is the opportunity to visit Normandy and the D-Day beaches and cemeteries.

Sorry, not Rome.

Went to Paris on biz for a few weeks in mid-2001. Never had any desire to go, but it turned out to be quite OK. The food is outstanding and not too pricey, the wine is cheap, the Paris Metro is easy to navigate, and of course there's a lot to see. The whole city is interesting.

The hotels are expensive and (IMHO) substandard. My company was paying $90/night for our rooms, 1 block from the Arc de Triomphe. We called it the Hotel Kitty Litter because of the aroma. Showering in the miniscule stall was a daily ordeal (the plastic show curtain would get sucked into the shower vortex and wrap around your body, yuch).

I did not find any symptoms of anti-Americanism, but that may have changed. Contrary to popular belief, I had no problems communicating in English.

What French intelligence? Didn't know they had any.

The ones with intelligence left France.

Oh c'mon, I didn't fall under any "spell." I just found it better than expected. It's not bad for a week or two.

I wouldn't really go out of my way to visit again, except that I think wifey might like it.

I've been to 26 countries, and Paris is kind of unique.

Wow, the U.S. has nearly four times the percentage of Muslims that Italy has.

What's worse, we have 20 times more muslims than they do.
