France Jails Ten Islamic Militants in Christmas Market Bomb Plot

A French court jailed 10 Islamic militants on Thursday for their role in a failed plot to bomb a popular Christmas market in Strasbourg, sentencing two of the ringleaders to 10 years in prison each. Public prosecutor Christophe Teissier said the decision to carry out the attack had been taken in Afghanistan, where the conspirators had all undergone military training. Abou Zoubeida, a right-hand man of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, is believed to have helped plan the Strasbourg attack, which was foiled when German police carried out raids in Frankfurt on December 25, 2000, following a tip-off from French intelligence. Police seized chemicals, detonators, and a surveillance video of the proposed site for the attack.

Simple. Muslims generally do not get along peaceably with their neighbors. (Secular Turkey is the exception). It's a jihad thing.
France is full of muslims, a legacy of its colonial past. Italy has far less.

Says that France has 7% Muslim and Italy only 1%. On top of that, it may be a matter of distribution and concentration...for example, the south of France is literally packed (in some towns).

France it trying to 'make nice' with the Arabs. Corrupt politicians see the opportunitiy to make a few bucks from Arab leaders, so they're afraid to cause any offense.
It's a very easy thing to do when you have no principles.

I think Earthdweller's info is more up-to-date...the info on the link I provided was dated 1998 (source was CIA...so it was probably in error).

Al Qaida tried to launch an attack last Christmas. Numerous flights from France were cancelled.
Richard Reid, the shoe bomber tried to blow up an American Airlines jet December 22, 2001.
Al Qaida would love to attack at Christmas.

Who do you believe?
Let's be generous and say 3 million. That's about 1 percent.

One possibility is France's inherently anti-secular nature. In countries where piety is generally accepted (or ignored) its hard for the radical imams to convince people that they're being oppressed. France's bureaucracy has a very anti-religious streak - both anti-Christian and anti-Muslim. Easier for people to succumb to the message of separatism, hate and oppression.
