Hundreds Search for Missing Autistic Boy
Associated Press ^ | Dec. 20, 2004 | Associated Press

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Hundreds of volunteers searched for a missing 9-year-old boy, who is autistic and unable to speak, as temperatures dropped.

Logan Mitcheltree was last seen around 5 p.m. Saturday wearing a long-sleeved gray shirt, blue jeans and brown slippers. He remained missing early Monday, a Lycoming County emergency dispatcher said.

Temperatures dropped to 15 degrees Sunday night, with winds making it feel close to zero.

More than 350 people had signed up for search parties, directed from a command post set up at a fire station.

For safety reasons, only emergency personnel were asked to continue searching after dark, said South Williamsport Police Chief Rexford Lowmiller.

My prayers go out to this family. How sad, so close to Christmas. I hope the child found shelter.

Does not say if they issued an Amber Alert but still the internet can be a useful tool.

Our local news said that computer played a huge part in finding the gal that murdered a mother and stole the child. So, maybe we can send this to friends and family.

Sure. The rest of us are goobers who can't use a flashlight. This sort of "emergency elitism" just has to stop.

While I agree with your comment, I have a feeling that the officials did not want folks out in extreme temperatures at night, the fear of not only looking for the child but also looking for someone who is searching.

That is just a thought. Frankly with all the electronics we have anyone should have been allowed to help search.

Yeah. the thing that gets me is they'll turn away hale and hearty volunteers in favor of "official" personnel who have been at Dunkin' Donuts a few too many times ... Just because they're "official."

No, it's as the other poster stated - while you're searching for a lost boy who could die in the cold, you don't want to have to put resources into finding people who have more willingness to help than ability.

I could tell you a story about how my husband jumped into a cool lake at night in his underwear searching for two kids while the "official" rescue people just stood around....

God, help this little boy, and please lead him to his rescuers. Father, You told me to pray to You, and that is what I'm doing - coming to You, asking for a miracle. In Jesus name, I ask it...

Search for Missing Boy Continues

I just pray that he has found his way into a barn, and is snuggling down there. Father, You hear me calling to you...

Here's something from an interesting article about autistic children wandering off:

Compared with others of the same age, they are more likely to wander off and may be drawn to bodies of water, tall structures or busy streets, because they often have no sense of physical danger.

As a volunteer firefighter who has been on several large scale search and rescue operations, I can tell you more than one story about a well meaning "un-official" rescue worker who had to be found in addition to the "official" lost person.

Two weeks ago, we had a lost hunter that was diabetic and bi-polar. There were over 200 people in the search party, two choppers, 20 dogs, it was a massave operation and the coordinators had a big job putting trained people in the right places. Jumping into a lake is one thing and your husband is a great guy, but a search over a possible several hundred acres of wooded area is something else, think about this before you hit the post button.

Severely autistic children can be as helpless as a toddler since they can't communicate and their reasoning skills can be very limited. The child might even hide from the searchers if they are making lots of noise. They have been learning so much in the past few years on how to help these children, but it takes lots of love to raise one. Autism varies so much in it's severity from child to child so it is hard to know what this child is like. God knows when the littlest sparrow falls, so it is up to God and the effort of the community. May God walk with this child.

I understand how you feel. However, SAR is not just about finding the person. It's also about finding clues so you can make projections about the person's whereabouts so that you can marshal the resource to contain and find that person faster. Sometimes untrained SAR people miss and inadvertently destroy, those very important clues. That being said, I think the not allowing volunteer night searchers is more about legal liability and safety.

That's because they are Fast Eddie Rendel's official folks. Fast Eddie is the Governor who tried to cut off the military vote in the election -- he made it impossible for the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan to vote in the election for president -- the ballot with Nader was invalid, and the new ballot could not reach our troops in time and be sent back by the deadline.

Fast Eddie'snonsense did partially get thrown out in court. But Freepers owe Fast Eddie on two counts -- this one and the Freeper Don Smart case -- the Freeper beat up by Union thugs on the orders of Fast Eddie when he was Mayor of Pennsylvania town.

A boy like that [autistic] is probably someone that Jesus will embrace for Christmas -- so if he is not found in time -- he might spend Christmas with Jesus in heaven.

I have known children who have loved ones that they know are in heaven, and it does not bother them since they are with Jesus. It is just the loved ones will miss this boy -- if he is not found.

God bless and Merry Christmas to all.

God help this little guy....

Y'know.... If I were a parent of an autistic kid, and was worried about him running off, it would be nice if there was some sure-fire way of being able to track him. A radio tracking something or other, perhaps -- say, a bracelet that the little guy couldn't take off.
