What would you do if this happened:

picture a regiment of Oklahoman's came to your home town of yankeeville or hell or wherever it is that you call home, and started killing or capturing every male in site regardless of their status in the military of your particular state. Then they went on to rape most of the women in town and burn every single crop to the ground and steal any stored food or wood (for heating) so that the remaining survivors would starve or freeze to death (after being raped of course)

You have just pictured the 'schorched earth' policy of sherman's march to the sea.
