DENVER - Residents of Samaritan House didn't know what to expect when the bearded, middle-aged man parked his sport utility vehicle in front of the downtown homeless shelter Christmas Eve.
The man walked into the building, pulled out a thick roll of $100 bills and began passing them out to each of the approximately 300 residents.
When he was finished, he had given out $35,000.
"It was like seeing Santa Claus and God all at once," said William Chengelis, who has lived at the shelter since November. "You hear about stuff like that but you don't think you'll be there when it happens."
As a crowd gathered, the man said he had once been homeless and knew what it was like to be in need. He did not identify himself and said only that he lived in Denver and had also distributed money at a Las Vegas shelter.
Possibly the man's biggest single donation was $5,000 to a family of six to find housing. Louis Quezada, Tessa Wittner and their four children had been living with Quezada's parents but were thrown out after an argument. They had been in the shelter several days.
"He asked if he gave us the money, would we get a house with it," said Quezeda, 23. "We said yes."
cool yule
/speeding tickets?
Merry Christmas.
Yup that's worth a few cartons of cancer sticks and a bottle of rot gut!
And he beleived him?
$100 will buy a lot of Thunderbird...
"Beer spill on aisle 9!" "Wine spill on aisle 8!"
Money would have been much better spent of he'd gave them several cases of jackets and shoes in most sizes.
"An anonymous donor has given $50,000 -- the largest single gift ever -- to the Mobile Register's Neediest Families Campaign. "
This story is analagous to how God loves us. He gave us all the gift of live. Some squander it. Some do small things. A few do great things. I believe the man who gave the gifts of $100. should be commended for allowing the people in the homeless shelter to exercise one of their greatest God given gifts-- the gift of freedom of choice.
gift of live = gift of life
In keeping with MSM tradition, the headline should read:
"SUV Brings 35K to Homeless"
You beat me to it! LOL
That's exactly what it's going to be. You'd have to be pretty gullible to give a 23 year old and his shack-up girlfriend with no job between them but 4 kids already $5000 and believe they will suddenly become responsible when they've never been responsible in their lives.
So, what if it's only one guy -- a single person -- out of that entire group who turns his life around with $100? Was it worth it?
I say yes.
Actually, it should be something like:
"SUV-Driving Fat Cat Insults the Shelter-Challenged Community With Patronizing, Dignity-Robbing Pittance."
-ccm
This guy must have been a lottery winner, easy come ... silly go.
