WASHINGTON - Everyone considers immigration reform a top priority when Congress reconvenes next month. But no one agrees what "reform" means.
"I fully understand the politics of immigration reform," President Bush assured reporters this week. Many lawmakers, including the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, call tougher enforcement the centerpiece of reform. Many others interpret reform as a code word for a guest-worker program that puts illegal immigrants on track toward a green card.
This apparent contradiction could doom legislation. Or perhaps Capitol Hill's long immigration stalemate could be broken by some deft combination of getting tough and giving hope.
"A lot of people have said that could be a good compromise," Mariposa Republican Rep. George Radanovich said. "It depends on who you want to please to get a bill passed."

Dubbed AgJobs, the bill would give several hundred thousand illegal immigrants working in agriculture the chance to attain legal residency and, in time, U.S. citizenship.

Following the lead of the House Judiciary Committee chairman, Wisconsin Republican James Sensenbrenner, Radanovich was one of 67 House Republicans to vote against a big intelligence overhaul bill because it failed to take a tough enough line against illegal immigration.
"Immigration reform and border security are paramount to ensure American safety," Radanovich said. "Why were those massive issues not factored into this (intelligence) legislation?"

In particular, conservatives denounced the immigration bill because it dropped a provision banning states from issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants and another provision limiting appeals for immigrants facing deportation. Sensenbrenner now promises to revive the proposals first thing next year.
"Denying illegal aliens driver's licenses is the right thing to do," Sensenbrenner said on CNN.

And the expense would truly be minimal compared to the size of the federal budget. The people in Washington take to acting as though this would be some huge involved project akin to building a manned base on Mars. It's nothing of the sort.
Oh! contrair he (is) responsible for the continueing mess on immigration because he is 100% behind this thing and expects all his underlings to sign off on his Amnesty Plan! He could solve this dilemma overnight by simply doing the will of over 80% of the voting American Tax paying public voters. It is his issue to lose and it could cost him in ways he doesn't want to consider. Impeachment is not out of the question because this issue is life changing for millions of frustrated voters! This issue is not negotiable its a "NO_BRAINER"; assuming you have a Brain!

Of course not. We simply cannot live with people who have radically different customs and lifestyles from our own if they are not prepared to leave their old life completely behind.
My mother knew a woman from Catholic school who fell in love with a Middle Eastern Muslim man who was working at an American firm. Against her parents' protests, she married him, and later found out that he wanted to take her and the children back to his home country. If he had succeeded (I don't know if he did) in persuading her to go, she would almost certainly have found herself unable to leave with her kids. (This, of course, was the plot of Not Without My Daughter [a true story], but such dilemmas occur with distressing frequencies.)

Bush has made the problem no better by his asinine "guest-worker" amnesty plan - but increased the number attempting to cross the border illegally.

Correct, but it is racist to target one group of illegals with an amnesty plan while discriminating against others - ie. the government's OTM arrests.

Legalization by deportation - not legislation is the only common sense avenue for illegals. Bankruptcy is the only common sense avenue for felon employers.
They are all the same, and as Travis points out they are all buddies at places like Davos.
Yes --- and if we need immigrants we need them from a mix of countries, from a mix of backgrounds and languages --- which makes immigrants quickly realize the importance of a common language. It's one thing when you have a shop of Polish, Germans, Dutch, and Greeks working together --- they will soon realize it's a good thing to be able to communicate. We need to get back to the melting pot type of immigration --- not barring Haitians looking for a better life while giving unlimited rights to only Mexicans. Also immigration and travel and study rights to the USA should be limited to our allies --- look at the countries fighting with us in Iraq --- and look at which ones are not. The Polish people support us, so do the people in El Salvador --- the Mexican people do not.
And it's only making the problems in Mexico much worse. More abandoned children growing up fending for themselves in the streets of Mexico, more poverty back home, more desperate levels of immigration --- more deaths on the border, skyrocketing crime in Mexico. It's not as though any of this is helping anyone at all.
It's only the JOBS THAT AMERICANS WON'T DO....

Someone in the media needs to expose how the Mexican elites are exported their poor to this country. If the roles were reversed and it was the US trying to get rid of its non-white poor, the ruckus from the media would be enormous.
