Posted on 12/29/2004 1:48:49 PM PST by paudio
As sad as it is, the SE Asia earthquake is not the worst natural disaster ever. In 1991, Bangladesh suffered from Typhoon that killed about 140,000 people. Before that, in 1970, the country also lost 300,000 people from natural disaster.
The SE Asia disaster, however, seems to be a significant one because there are many Westerners, including 'celebrities', died in this unfortunate event.
Please look at the website that list of the worst 100 natural disaster in the 20th century. They also include famine and epidemic, though.
I have no doubt the enviromentalists will exploit this situation.
Is Communism considered a "natural disaster"?
I recalled those disasters as well, and kept telling my wife this wasn't the worst one. The media is so shallow and uninformed.
No. That's unnatural.
not sure the #2 on the list is a natural disaster, I always understood that the Ukraine 'famine' was on the orders of Stalin.
I guess that the worst natural disaster ever is the one you and/or your loved ones are caught up...regardless of the relative size.
That is just an awful statement.
The Spanish Flu epidemic of the early 20th century makes everything else look like a ride in the park I should think.
Yes, it is; I've been shocked at some of the things "said" about this dreadful event.
Well, the total loss of life here is still unknown, so it's hard to draw many conclusions on its ranking among disasters just yet.
My sentiments exactly!
The flood in China 1897 killed an estimated 900,000.
Somehow that fact just does not weigh very heavily in my mind....
I had read that it was over a million.
"Worst. Natural disaster.Ever."
Doesn't count. Kerry was only the worst natural disaster ever, wannabe.
There's no way to know exactly how many perished in previous disasters - It's only in the past century that body counts and 'world records' became fashionable.
Moral of the story........stay out of India, China, Russia, Africa, and Bangladesh. You'll be fine.
Whew! On some of the threads lately, I thought I had fallen into an alternate universe inhabited by hellions.
900,000 was the conservative estimate. Regardless of size this latest event is very tragic and with the speed of today's media it is all the more horrifying because you feel closer to it. I pray for the living and the dead. I think this will touch 200K total from the event and it's aftermath.
Let's not forget The Black Death: up to 1/2 of Europe died over 5 years.
The Plague wasn't as bad as that and wasn't as bad as the Spanish Influenza outbreak.
Several of the top disasters listed (famine/drought) were man made by communism. The top loss of life is still from communist purges and policies.
I'll bet the death toll will exceed 300,000
Yeaaah for CG. A little historical perspective to bring the presstitutes to their knees from the wise ones at FR is a great way to end my day..
I know it isn't a natural disaster, but why isn't Communism on the list? It would be up there near the top.
Wonder how many millions will die when the Three Gorges Dam collapes from its shoddy construction?
It gives the media and the Euroweenies one more reason to bash Bush.
Actually, the plague wiped out 1/4 of the population of Europe.
I had once read of a Chinese earthquake that killed millions about 500 years ago.
I'll see your Spanish flu and raise you a dinosaur-killing asteroid. 8^)

See post 94 for stats for earthquakes and tsunamis from Forces of Nature.
Earthquake- 1556, January 23 - Senshi Province, China - Over 830,000.
You are correct, sir.
Genesis 8:23 'And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.'
Worst natural disaster ever? That's an easy one. The Great Deluge of Noah. All breathing creatures on the face of the earth were destroyed except for a single male/female pair of every species plus Noah, his wife, their three sons and their three wives. How many died? All except for the eight on the ark.
I would consider it the worst disaster if even one of my loved ones was involved. Please, let us not be bogged down by numbers.
This is a tragic event of epic proportions but let's keep it in perspective.
Why a "celebrity" would want to visit a part of the world where basic services are haphazzard at best, and at worst are backwards and unsanitary is absolutely beyond me.
Helmut Kohl was there. He was airlifted out on Sunday or Monday.
The flooding of the Huang He river in China in August of 1931 killed 3,700,000.
You have obviously not been to these places. While conditions can be quite primitive inland in smaller, isolated villages, the conditions at these resorts and ocean front places is quite nice, even luxurious in most instances. Very much like Mexico where resorts are fully modern and cater to tourists.
What is it with China and floods over the years, they havent figured that crap out yet?
How could you say that? I'm not even aware of any celebrities that died. As far as I'm concerned the numbers are staggering regardless of who comprises the number. I wouldn't be surprised to see the number deade go much higher. This is a huge tragedy, no matter how many people died in the flu epidemic of 1918.
Yes the suffering will not be eased without strong oversight by the US and others. Keep the UN away!
I'm afraid the toll will touch 200k from the event and aftermath.
