2004 - A milestone in the history of mankind. This is the right time to list the UNPRECEDENTED events that took place. But also the right place, since many of those events were recognised as UNPRECEDENTED first in freerepublic.
Here is a start for the long list, in the category "Mankind - Free Will" :

October 29, 2004 - people of one nation (actually of 25 nations) give up their independance

Or to use the words of Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian premier : "Never in history have we seen an example of nations voluntarily deciding to exercise their sovereign powers jointly.

According to some, 13 sovereign nations gave up their independence to form the United States of America. That was some time before 2004.

Those who believe the southern states had a right to secede base it on the theory that at some point, even for only a moment, each of the 13 states was independent and sovereign. These sovereign states voluntarily agreed to form a Union, and therefore had the right to secede and resume their independent status whenever they decided to.

I don't happen to agree with this theory of how the US was formed, but it is the basis for all justifications of the legality of secession.

You might not have noticed, but the Declaration of Independence declared the colonies were and of right ought to be free and independent states (i.e. nations each with its own sovereign government). The position was vindicated by arms (and the help of the French) several years before the constitution which made one nation. The Articles of Confederation did not remove the sovereignty of each state, being more like the old E.U.

(It is for this reason not actually correct to call George Washington the 'first President of the United States'--an obscure patriot named John Hansen has that distinction, being the first to occupy the office with that title under the Articles--rather he was the first President of the United States under the Constitution.)

Well, under the original CONFEDERACY formed before the Constitution, each state WAS soveriegn. They gave that up to ratify the Constitution.

By the way, this year the first Moslem state in the Middle East held free elections.

"I don't happen to agree with this theory of how the US was formed, but it is the basis for all justifications of the legality of secession."

So, since you don't believe what actually happened, what theory do you subscribe to?

This site lists Hanson and the other Presidents under the Articles:
President of the United States in Congress assembled.

Haven't learned much about that. Down here in seventh grade, US history gets sidelined for the geography of the Eastern Hemisphere.

Sometimes I think we'd be better off that way. But I suppose on the whole it's okay the way it is. We've got a pretty good constitution when we stick to it.

They were still under King George in 1889?
