Kerry Wins . . . board approval to install rail
Boston Herald ^ | 12/23/04 | David R. Guarino

If Sen. John F. Kerry [related, bio] had his way, he'd be lobbying foreign leaders, leaning on Congress and mapping a new Supreme Court from the White House wings.

Instead, his government interaction last week was limited mostly to the arcane world of City Hall and the Beacon Hill Architectural Commission.

Kerry and his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, won initial approval Dec. 16 - only after a lengthy debate and contingent on a rash of future paperwork - to build twin railings on the front steps of their Louisburg Square mansion. To bolster their case, the Kerrys laid out everything from the type of metal used for the railing, its color, where exactly it'll be attached and just how many screws will be used.

City Hall was abuzz with the Kerrys' somewhat stealth application for the complicated home fix-it, particularly given the senator's past run-ins with the board and city over his home. Colleen Meagher, a city preservation planner who works for the commission, said the commission reviews ``any exterior architectural alteration that is visible from a public way.''

The Kerrys, who came under fire for having a fire hydrant removed after they moved to Beacon Hill, have won past approvals for a new decorative iron balcony, a new front porch light and hidden door phone and a stoop replacement, records show. Among the board's denials are a 1995 bid by the Kerrys to extend a balcony across the house. In 1997, they were cited for a ``visible'' satellite dish on the roof, records show.

The Kerrys applied for the new railings after their housekeeper sprained her ankle, sources said.

A Kerry spokeswoman said of the flap:``Winter's here and this was a common-sense precaution for the icy months. The requisite steps were taken to ensure the handrail meets the city's guidelines.''

"I see I have erred, Mr. Councilman. These are phillips screws and I see the rules call for slotted screws. I shall stop at the hardware store during my next power walk and exchange them posthaste. Thank you for your vigilance."

This is the place that shot up in value from 6.5 million to 13 million to accomodate a 6.5 million dollar home equity loan for Kerry's then struggling campaign. I heard Kerry finished the campaign with millions unspent. How much of that went to pay off the 6.5 million loan???

Would that be historically "correct"? Or would they need to be hand-crafted slotted iron screws imported from an architectural supply store on a small back street in London?

BTW, there are plenty of the superrich who don't live like that. The Waltons of Wal-Mart and Warren Buffett (yeah, right, he IS a Dem!) come to immediate mind.

Maybe so! LOL. "Effin, send one of the staff over to find your slotted iron screws at once."

<< and ppl thought that john F'n couldnt get things done >>

Jean Kérrie cannot.

Jean Kérrie is pretty much despised by everyone who's ever had the misfortune to be encountered by him, "Democrat"-activist bureaucrats and all -- and like eveyone else in "Democrat"-owned-operated-controlled, stoodover and shookdown Boston, will have to fork over a hefty under-the-table sling if his owner's house is ever to be altered.

Only the Devil, the kennedy "family" and the rest of the Mob have any idea whatsoever how he was ever and/or is ever elected to public office.

Can you imagine having a conversation with JFK about minutiae ?
I'm thinking the Beacon Hill Architectural Commission caved to stop being bored to tears and to just shut him up.

Who would he go after?

These guys perhaps:

********

Just minutes after the earthquake in the Indian Ocean on Sunday morning, Thailand's foremost meteorological experts were sitting together in a crisis meeting. But they decided not to warn about the tsunami "out of courtesy to the tourist industry", writes the Thailand daily newspaper The Nation.

The experts got the news around 8:00 am on Sunday morning local time.

An hour later, the first massive wave struck. But the experts started to discuss the economic impacts when they were discussing if a tsunami warning should be made. The main argument against such a warning was that there have not been any floods in 300 years. Also, the experts believed the Indonesian island Sumatra would be a "cushion" for the southern coast of Thailand. ...We finally decided not to do anything because the tourist season was in full swing. The hotels were 100% booked full.

********
