THANK YOU PET OWNERS! Injured Marine Needs Help, Freepers Respond!

FRiends,

As many of you know, The Hobbit Hole has been following the story of Andy, a young Marine that was injured in Fallujah on Thanksgiving Day. You can read about our initial introduction to Andy here...

Initial introduction.

I’ve posted periodic updates from his mother and the Hobbit Hole has sent cards and even sent him a couple of our knives, one especially fine knife with his name engraved on it, as a token of our appreciation.

Andy is doing well, although he had to make the decision not long ago to have his wounded leg removed. Since then, he has really progressed. He still has quite a bit of rehab to go.

If you have the Time Magazine with Bush on the front...the Man of the Year magazine...Andy is in the section where he is getting his Purple Heart from President Bush. He is shaking the president’s hand. You can see Andy, but all you can see of Bush is his hand and forearm.

At this current time, his parents are staying at the Navy Lodge and I asked them if there was anything we could do for them. They had only one request and I thought I would pass it on to the animal lovers of this forum.

They need help with the cost of boarding both Andy’s dog Gus, and their own animals during the time they are staying with Andy. The animals are being boarded at:

Fur Family Members Pet Care
2110 Strickland Bridge Rd
Fayetteville, NC 28304
910-426-3400

If you can help with this, even if just a little, please send a check to this business, designated “Hatcher Boarding Costs”. The Hatchers have asked for nothing except this one thing and they didn’t even ask for this until I asked them.

Thanks for any help you can give...

Did anyone get in touch with the boarders and let them know folks were calling?

I haven't tried to call...thought I'd try after 3:30pm central...looks like they might be around then, according to the website (wouldn't that be 4:30pm NC time?)

Did they have an answering machine?

Only reason I'm asking is that a lot of us are "electronic" these days. I don't have ANY bills that I don't pay online...so checks are out-of-date...I'm happy to contribute electronically.

Oh yeah...I'd like to talk to her about PayPal. When I was sending the troops the Hobbit Hole care packages, that's how most of the contributors did it and it was very easy.

If I get ahold of her first, I'll let you know and you do likewise, ok? Her name is Lisa Adams...

While I wouldn't abuse the Dose ping list by using it here, just thought we could help spread the word. Maybe a mention and link on today's Dose, for whoever's doing it? Lot's of animal lovers are regulars.

Not in a very long time, so it's much appreciated. So is your effort to help this family and their pets. Too bad I live in SoCal, or I'd offer to foster the animals.

Thanks for the bump! The Hobbit Hole has been following this young Marine's progress for some time now, since before he got his Purple Heart from President Bush and then he got his picture in Time! That was very exciting for us in the Hole!

Hi...I just talked to the owner of the boarding service...we do need to work out something so that these folks aren't overwhelmed by checks. The boarding bill so far is about $700. The PayPal thing seems to be the way to go...what is the progress? Do you need me to set it up?

$700!!!!

Oh my goodness.

Well, it should figure, since I know he's been hospitalized since right after Thanksgiving.

Do they accept PayPal? It is my understanding that they do not except credit cards.

I don't know what to do with that information! Lots of small checks might just be what they get. I wouldn't think there will be hundreds of checks, and unless the kennel wants to set up or provide a paypal addy, I don't think we have much choice.

aughh!! forgot to ask the credit card question! The lady was so nice to call me back from her caller-ID. (I didn't leave a call-back number). She will be emailing me later today, and I will find out the best way to do this. If all of us pet-lovers give $5...we should cover it.

I'm not too worried about them getting checks...I'm more astounded by that FIGURE!

That's a monumental bill...
