FRiends,
As many of you know, The Hobbit Hole has been following the story of Andy, a young Marine that was injured in Fallujah on Thanksgiving Day. You can read about our initial introduction to Andy here...
Ive posted periodic updates from his mother and the Hobbit Hole has sent cards and even sent him a couple of our knives, one especially fine knife with his name engraved on it, as a token of our appreciation.
Andy is doing well, although he had to make the decision not long ago to have his wounded leg removed. Since then, he has really progressed. He still has quite a bit of rehab to go.
If you have the Time Magazine with Bush on the front...the Man of the Year magazine...Andy is in the section where he is getting his Purple Heart from President Bush. He is shaking the presidents hand. You can see Andy, but all you can see of Bush is his hand and forearm.
At this current time, his parents are staying at the Navy Lodge and I asked them if there was anything we could do for them. They had only one request and I thought I would pass it on to the animal lovers of this forum.
They need help with the cost of boarding both Andys dog Gus, and their own animals during the time they are staying with Andy. The animals are being boarded at:
Fur Family Members Pet Care
2110 Strickland Bridge Rd
Fayetteville, NC 28304
910-426-3400
If you can help with this, even if just a little, please send a check to this business, designated Hatcher Boarding Costs. The Hatchers have asked for nothing except this one thing and they didnt even ask for this until I asked them.
Thanks for any help you can give...

Dog lovers, pet lovers... this is a very real part of life that becomes difficult whenever a family has an extended recovery period far from home. I know I'd be up a creek in such a circumstance with my life, dogs and horses needing to just be put on "pause" for a while. We all know they can't. If you will consider writing small (or large) checks for this family, I think it would be money well spent. This Marine has given alot to us.
Pinging for one of our wounded.
Thanks, you two!
Chris, Andy's mom, told me that she absolutely couldn't believe the kindness shown her from the Hobbit Hole. From strangers.
Thanks for letting us know about the needs of Andy and his family, 2J!
I think Corin scanned it and can post it
Sam's insisting that I send something tonite...
Yet.
Here is the latest update...just in today...
Got an email from Andy's mom! Has a new address too, to send cards or letters to.HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
Once again we want to thank you for all your positive thoughts, cards, emails and prayers!!!!
Andy has been transferred to Walter Reed Army Medical Center.....its is approx. 7 miles from Bethesda. Any mail sent to Bethseda will be brought to him by the Marine Liaisons Office. George and I are continuing to stay at the Navy Lodge. When Andy is released from the hospital and classified as an outpatient, he will be living at the Mologne House on post....we willl stay with him until he is comfortable getting around on his own.
Andy is getting his strength back....he lost quite a bit of weight...the transfer to WRAMC is very positive...he is healing quickly and has remained infection-free!!! They will continue to monitor his hearing loss and eyesight, as well as the shrapnel wound on his arm. Thank goodness he was in excellent physical condition when he was injured!!!!! His full rehab - including physical and occupational therapy - will take 6 - 8 months....inbetween phases he should get some weekend passes and 30 days convalescent leave. He is expected to fully recover and with the help of advanced technology, be able to everything he wants to do....run, swim, rock climb, etc. !!! It's all pretty amazing! He will be fully evaluated by his rehab team early next week...so we will take one day at a time as we begin the next phase of "Andy's Excellent Adventure!"
If you would like to stay in touch...Andy's address is:
[Freepmail me]
God Bless!
Chris and George
Forwarding this to a friend who lives in Fayetteville.
That is a good lookin' pooch!
Thanks Corin!
:-)
Done.
Thank you!
I made sure to put the phone number for accountability. Patriciaruth and the Hobbit Hole can vouch for my integrity. That's very important to me.
Our cats say since it's for a Marine, okay.
I tried calling, but they don't pick up. Do you have any connections to let them know that folks are calling?
How much does the boarding cost per day? And how long do they foresee needing to board the dog? I know it's probably hard to say...
Never mind--I answered my own question by visiting the website for the kennel. It costs $17 per night.
