WASHINGTON (AP) - Hillary Clinton's former campaign fund-raising director is indicted in Los Angeles.

AP-NY-01-07-05 1651EST

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's former finance director has been indicted on charges of causing false campaign finance reports to be filed with the Federal Election Commission, the Justice Department said Friday.

The indictment of David Rosen, unsealed in Los Angeles, focuses on his fund-raising for an Aug. 12, 2000, gala for Clinton in Los Angeles. The New York Democrat was still first lady at the time.

While the event allegedly cost more than $1.2 million, the indictment said, Rosen reported contributions of about $400,000, knowing the figure to be false.

The indictment charged that Rosen provided some documents to the an FEC compliance officer but withheld the true costs of the event and provided false documents to substantiate the lower figure.

In one instance, Rosen obtained and delivered a fraudulent invoice stating the cost of a concert associated with the gala was $200,000 when he know that figure was false, according to the indictment. The actual cost of the concert was more than $600,000.

Each of the four counts of making a false statement carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines upon conviction.

Pardon Scandal Goes To Hollywood

The $2 million was supposedly part of a $17 million offer for Clinton to work with Stan Lee media later on, and Paul alleges that he talked about a pardon for his previous offenses with then-DNC Chairman Ed Rendell. On top of that, the lawsuit names some major Hollywood celebrities as witnesses, including Brad Pitt, Cher, John Travolta, and hardcore partisan Barbara Streisand. "In the presence of Melanie Griffith, Sean Young, and Morgan Fairchild, among others, Mrs. Clinton again thanked Plaintiff for his generous financial support," says the court document.

Paul apparently didn't always part with his money so willingly however -- the lawsuit notes that he was increasingly concerned about the mounting costs of the Hollywood tribute, and that he had been allegedly warned that backing out of the event would end any ties he and the company had to Clinton. "After being threatened against backing out of the Hollywood Tribute fundraiser, Plaintiff asked that Mrs. Clinton’s U.S. Senate campaign put up $200,000 to help defray the mounting cost of the event. (Campaign Finance Director David) Rosen, who was in daily contact with Mrs. Clinton, refused," says the court document

Despite the attention-getting nature of the allegations however, Paul can still expect to face blistering attacks on his own credibility. Along with an earlier felony record, he was recently indicted for stock manipulation during his stint with Stan Lee Media, which folded early this year. Paul's credibility also suffers when considering that he's still avoiding U.S. authorities by living in Brazil, even if this week's release noted that he's eager to cooperate with the Justice Department. Critics could even argue that he's trying to deflect his own prosecution by dragging the Clintons down with him, but Paul reportedly kept evidence of his relationship with them, including cancelled checks and thank you notes. Meanwhile, Stan Lee, the creator of comic book classics like Spider Man and the Incredible Hulk, has not been charged with any wrongdoing. According to the lawsuit, Paul saw Mr. Lee as the "Walt Disney of the comics industry" and was supposedly out to turn him into a "universally recognized cultural icon" with his political activities.

Paul insists that Clinton campaign finance director David Rosen virtually demanded that Paul make another campaign contribution to a pro-abortion group in Illinois for $55,000. That money made it into Hillary's campaign war chest as well. The charges against Paul, according to Klayman, "inherently implicate Hillary and Bill."

Peter Paul has also been indicted in a stock fraud case. There is evidence that the Clintons, instead of granting the expected pardon, got the Justice Department on his case, lest he talk about them. That almost worked, until Paul started talking about the campaign issues.

snip

The junior Senator from New York, the ex-President of the United States, the Governor of Pennsylvania. These are all very powerful political figures in this country. Since the Justice Department lawyers have interviewed Mr. Paul four times and have told him his allegations about the Clintons have "checked out,".

This is the same fund raiser that the guy was trying to hire the Pres. to be a part of his company and underwrote a huge chunk of this event. He fled the country because of stock problems to South Africa or maybe it was South America. He finally came back after some neogiations, etc. This was one of Larry Klaymans things also. Don't look for ties directly to the Clintons. Only the lower levels will be impacted, imho.

Hillary Clinton Finance Chairman Indicted With Help From Judicial Watch Client

Peter Paul’s Cooperation With Justice Department Leads To Charges Against Rosen

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, hailed news of the indictment of Sen. Hillary Clinton’s former Senate campaign finance chairman, David Rosen, on campaign finance charges related to a fund-raising event produced and paid for by Judicial Watch client Peter F. Paul.

Mr. Paul, a former Hollywood Internet entrepreneur and partner of Spiderman creator Stan Lee, spent nearly $2 million to produce in August 2000 a Hollywood tribute to honor President Clinton and to help raise funds for Hillary Clinton’s 2000 U.S. Senate campaign.  He was repeatedly assured that his expenses would be reported to the Federal Election Commission.

The Justice Department indictment, unsealed today, charges Rosen with causing false campaign finance reports to be filed with the FEC.  Rosen reported contributions of only $400,000 from the Hollywood gala.  He also is alleged to have filed a fraudulent invoice for the cost of the concert portion of the gala, reporting $200,000 when the actual cost was more than $600,000.  Rosen faces up to five years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines on each of four counts of making a false statement.

Judicial Watch brought a lawsuit in 2001 on behalf of Mr. Paul against Bill and Hillary Clinton, Rosen and other Clinton representatives after Mr. Clinton reneged on a $17 million deal to work for Mr. Paul’s Internet companies after he left the White House and because Mr. Paul’s expenses were not reported by Hillary Clinton to the FEC, as was required by law.  Mr. Paul has documentary evidence of his close relationship with the Clintons, including checks, thank-you notes from the Clintons and candid video and photographs.  Hillary Clinton was intimately involved in setting up the Hollywood gala and knew of the FEC misreporting.

“Judicial Watch welcomes the indictment of David Rosen on campaign finance charges, an indictment that was made possible by our client Peter Paul’s cooperation with the U.S. Justice Department,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.  We hope the Justice Department pursues this case all the way to Hillary Clinton.”

I used to support Judicial Watch, but have become cynical about that group since they never seem to produce any positive results. But that's another story...

The links on their website were very interesting. For instance, this one from July 13, 2001 drops some interesting names: Complaint: False Reporting of Federal Election Campaign Contributions.

In early 2000, Mr. Paul was approached by a former protege, Aaron Tonken, about elevating Stan Lee’s public profile, recognition and acceptance by contributing money to the Democratic Party. After being introduced to the President and Mrs. Clinton and Vice President and Mrs. Gore by Denise Rich at a small reception held at Mrs. Rich’s home in October 1999, Tonken had become a trusted producer for the Democratic National Committee (“DNC”), providing support and widely-recognized Hollywood talent for DNC fundraising activities with President Clinton and other prominent Democratic Party politicians. Tonken had worked directly with DNC Chairman Edward Rendell and DNC Southern California Finance Chairwoman Stephanie Berger on these fundraising activities.

Tonken induced Mr. Paul to contribute $30,000 to the DNC to co-host a fundraiser attended by President Clinton at Café Des Artistes in Hollywood, California. The dinner, held on February 17, 2000, was chaired by California Governor Gray Davis. In addition to Mr. Paul, other co-hosts included entertainer “Babyface” Edwards, actress Calista Flockhart and two real estate developers.

Paul Takes the Fall?
Posted Sept. 18, 2002
By Paul M. Rodriguez

A signed picture showing the Clintons with Peter Paul and his wife suggest that they were very aware of the political gift-giving of which they were recipients.

a man charged with robbing Peter to pay Paul through an elaborate scheme of alleged securities and bank fraud that involve the creator of Spiderman and the X-Men comic superheros, securities firms such as Merrill Lynch and Spear Leeds & Kellogg, political heavyweights David Rosen, Aaron Tonken and Terry McAuliffe.

Based in Chicago, David Rosen, has been a fundraiser for several Democratic candidates including U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton and Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. Most recently Mr. Rosen served as Midwest Finance Director for presidential candidate Wesley Clark. He also has helped candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives and Democratic 527 groups.

Not surprised.

From Landow to Coia, from Bing to Huang, these people used the most thoroughly unethical fund raising practices in the history of our republic.

In my opinion, the entire Clinton administration-with the possible exception of Donna Shalala-could have conducted their cabinet meetings at Allenwood.

I am still wondering how the poor, illiterate peasants in India managed to vote on electronic voting machines......

I don't know, perhaps they consulted Gandhi, of whom the New York Senator mentioned, "He ran a gas station down in St. Louis."
