'Pledge atheist' sues to block Bush prayer
World Net Daily ^ | Jan 7th, 2005

Atheist activist Michael Newdow, known for his attempt to remove "under God" from the Pledge, has petitioned a federal court to prevent the Bush administration from "engaging in Christian religious acts" related to the president's upcoming inauguration.

Pointing out that two ministers, Rev. Franklin Graham and the Rev.Kirbyjon Caldwell, prayed at Bush's first inaugural ceremony in 2001, Newdow says the Inaugural '05 website indicates the president will chose a minister to "deliver an invocation" before he takes the oath of office Jan. 20.

Rev. Louis P. Sheldon, chairman of the Traditional Values Coalition says it's "appalling that Christians are being singled out by Mr. Newdow for this sort of harassment."

"If any other religious group was being targeted for demotion to second-class citizenship, the ACLU and the liberal lobby would be shrieking," he said in a statement. "Today, they watch silently as a court considers taking another step towards barring the free and public exercise of religious beliefs."

Sheldon's group and other similar organizations are sponsoring a Christian Inaugural Eve Gala to celebrate the beginning of Bush's second term.

He said Newdow "should be ashamed for seeking this injunction against his fellow citizens. We, as Americans, need to awaken and deal with these threats to religious liberty, cynically disguised as 'civil liberties' defense."

"This is the day we have been warning America would come," he said.

Earlier this week, Newdow renewed his Pledge of Allegiance battle.

Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his case because he did not have legal standing to represent his daughter, who is under sole custody of her mother.

Tuesday, however, Newdow filed a complaint in federal court in Sacramento, Calif., with eight new co-plaintiffs, seeking to remove "under God" from the Pledge on the grounds it violates the so-called "separation of church and state."

Do you feel harassed? I do! Who else feels harassed? IANAL -- but I wonder if we can find some grounds on which to class-action his sorry butt.

No grounds to sue him, but I do believe we do have grounds for a tar-and-feather party... ;-)

How does he intend to block the wish of every pre-pubescent male in America? Or does this have something to do with the inauguration? Sorry, it was the cheap (they can't get rid of it, and I mean the good stuff!) french bordeaux, not me, I swear.

In all seriousness, and through "the cloud" in my head, people in this country just aren't taking these type seriousnly anymore. They are a joke. A threatening joke, but a joke nonetheless.

Here we go again. These liberal Christian hating atheists who don't understand that having a Priest, Rabi, or Reverend pray at your inauguration is not an "endorsement" of any religion. It is a simple show of faith and I as a conservative atheist who believes anyone can publicly show their faith any time anywhere, am appalled. I will say this again. I think there needs to be an organization that will fight in courts and in the public as the ACLU and other liberal freedom hating bigots do for the rights of the majority. That being Christians and freedom loving people of this great REPUBLIC. I truly believe when the federal government seized power back in the day, they did this nation a great disservice. We need to go back to the day when the fed was begging every state for funds to operate. If we leave them lean and hungry, they will do a much better job than when they are fat and happy (and in this case very very stupid). Oh, Thomas, what have we come to?

Mike Newdow is an average guy who actually started his first religious institution while in junior high school in New Jersey. He finished high school there, and then undertook some university work in assorted locations. In 1977, he became an ordained minister, and has since lived his life according to the tenets of the Universal Life Church, which basically state: "Do what's right." In 1997, he started his second religious institution, the First Amendmist Church of True Science (FACTS). Although that ministry holds a firmly atheistic view of the world, it strongly supports the ideals behind the Religion Clauses of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. [A brief synopsis of the religious views espoused by the ministry are presented in the Complaint which forms to basis of this lawsuit.]

He is presently working on obtaining his Master of Public Health degree at the UCLA School of Public Health. In 1996, he was awarded First Place in the Delta Omega Honorary Society of Public Health Student Essay Contest, writing on "Empowering the Disadvantaged: Social Justice in Public Health." In 1998, he obtained his Doctor of the Universe Degree.

The Rev. Dr. Newdow has the usual varied hobbies, including writing, music, theater, and sports. He has traveled fairly extensively, and dabbles in computer programming. Probably his greatest interest is fatherhood - he has a six year old daughter, for whom he has great hopes and plans. Included among these is the one he's working on now: her ability to go to public school free from daily theistic indoctrination, as guaranteed by the United States Constitution.

And they have the gall to label the guy REVEREND DOCTOR!
How's that for dissemination of false information?

The fact this guy used his own daughter to further his own agenda tells us all we need to know about him.

This should be interesting. I'd like to see a judge try tell the president how to run the inaugural ball.

I believe the President will also take the oath of office with his left hand on the Bible. What about that fact jackass? This guy doesn't have a prayer. But that's his real problem...

So exactly where in the First Amendment does it say that a minister must not "deliver an invocation" before GWB takes the oath of office?

I wish there was some way to bill Michael Newdow for the choking up our legal system with frivolous crap like this!

I am so sick of really stupid people. Mr. Michael Newdow needs to find a hobby. Here he is, a Doctor, and a Lawyer, does not have custody of his daughter, and yet he persists in filing these insane lawsuits in behalf of his daughter who does not believe the same way he does.

Of all the fathers you could have in the world, this one would win the prize for just plain stupid. Makes me feel sad for the daughter.

... the so-called "separation of church and state."

Damned right it's "so-called." How 'bout nonexistent?

The ONLY solution to this on-going, gets-worse-every-day problem is the appointment of non-activist, conservative judges.
