Major Web Host Down?
NA | 01/07/2005 | Martin at Blogbat

Posted on 01/07/2005 8:05:04 PM PST by blogbat

Hosting Matters, the webhost for Little Green Footballs, Wizbang! and others including blogbat’s future home has been down for an unspecified period of time and just recently started seeing a return of some of its sites to the web.

Hosting Matters’ own home page was also currenly down for a time. No announcements of mantainemnce or news of serious weather in the area have been reported in local news or made available to its users. It instead simply appears to be an unplanned event.

Hosting Matters maintains its web servers in Jacksonville, FL USA. An e-mail has been sent to HM to find out why the servers went offline. I’m currently awaiting a response or announcement. The hosts main page has now returned to the web, along with Wizbang!, but Little Green Footballs and others have not yet returned.

I'm pretty sure (given the large scope of the attack) that this is not an attack on specific sites but an attack on one of their border routers. Some sites may be up, depending on which server your site is located on, and whether or not that server is located behind a border router affected by this attack. Also, depending on network configuration and the number of upstream providers they have, some people may still be able to access your site depending on the route they take from their PC to your web site.

By the way, here is the address of the emergency support forum :

http://www.hmdnsgroup.net/forums/

It's located on a different network so not affected by this.

Thanks for the link, Trippin. It would be tasty to examine one of the zombies seemingly involved with this.

UPDATES

I posted a summary of the excitement at my xanga blog:

www.xanga.com/blogbat

Since I posted to that, two new updates came from HM. The first one indicated they might have a handle on it, but the latest post there at about 2:11 am CST says "not quite so fast..."

So the fun continues.
