A 13-year-old boy is recuperating at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta after doctors performed a kidney transplant.
Edgar Gutierrez underwent surgery Tuesday night, three years after his father violated US immigration law to help his ailing son.
His father, Fidelmar Gutierrez, says the family is grateful.
The boy had been in limbo since he and his family left Mexico and entered the United States without permission to seek medical help for the boy, who has kidney disease.
The family said they could not afford dialysis in Mexico. US law requires hospitals to treat patients with life-threatening illnesses regardless of immigration status or ability to pay.
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta began providing treatment three times a week after a doctor said Edgar would die without dialysis. A story in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution last year prompted to people to donate 164-thousand dollars to put toward the cost of the operation and drugs that the boy will need to take for the rest of his life.
Those people were CNN executive Eason Jordan and retired Delta Air Lines pilot Joseph Moss.
The boy received the transplant from someone who had just died.
No Comment.!!!! Thanks for posting though.
It just blows my mind.....I'm almost speechless.
Well fortunately, kidneys grow on trees, so no one else was bumped to the back of the waiting line.
I hope they send flowers to the funeral of the American who had to die of kidney failure because of this disgrace.
Dang immigrants and their kidneys.
It's nice to know that America and Americans will pick up this tab. We are the welfare capital of the world. Wonder how he got bumped up the list....I hear it is a long one.
Many people die every day waiting for one.
I can see federal law advocating helping America's poor with bills like this....but illegals as well? Doesn't that put American law at odds with itself?
It's illegal to aid a criminal, but that's exactly what federal law is advocating....aiding criminals.
I think we all know what this thread is going to deteriorate into sooner or later.
Heck, if our borders were guarded we wouldn't have this problem.
I know of a lot of non-Americans who come to this country for treatment. I'm wondering why this family did not follow any procedures in place for this kind of thing?
Was it necessary to break the law?
An American with no insurance would have been told get lost.
They didn't want the inconvenience or any kind of wait. It worked --- they went straight to the front of the line --- and it's completely free for them.
I think you've already started the deterioration process on this thread.
It IS a long list. Our oldest daughter is waiting for one. She had already received one from her daddy and after it failed after 10 years she is back on dialysis.
Oh really? And just how in your mind did I do that?
The boy was 13. I don't care if he was a citizen or not.
Rejoice that he is alive and well.
The only downside I see is he didn't get one of Scott Peterson's kidneys.
Quit acting clueless. I've read many of your past comments on the subject of illegal immigration. Your agenda on this subject is transparent to all.
