Dewey certainly knew what he wanted, but his vision of the future was pretty far from what most of us want. In whatever defense might be mustered for him I must say that this was twenty years before the Russian Revolution, and to the Fabians the socialist fantasy-world was fresh and compelling and not yet the bloodstained mess it turned out to be in real life. A lot of bright people were fooled: Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, Sidney and Beatrice Webb. These weren't Marxists; they felt their "Jevonian" approach an alternative to the starkness and violence of Marx. In the end they were only fooling themselves. Like a lot of smart people with theory on the brain they steadfastly denied contraindicative evidence and held with all their might to their illusions. Smart maybe, but not wise in any sense.
Schools do not teach children to think in any way.
I tried being a teacher for a year. My model came from the Jesuits who taught me. As a result, I used a large vocabulary and gave essay tests. These two points were specifically mentioned in my negative evaluations.
After I tendered my resignation, I asked the advance placement kids (who were all great) what they thought of their education. They all said it was terrible because they couldn't write. I was floored because in high school the Jesuits forced us to write in every class (except mathematics).
Ever since, I have remembered a quote from Frank Zappa on how he raised his kids. He said
"I got them out of the public education system as fast as possible"
Thank you for posting this!
I agree with those AP kids, that our education is horrible. I can barely put togther a decent report let alone a term paper.
Hey, just another family business, y'know (g!).
Prompting the comment from another right wing Senator of his era to point out that "extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice"
Dewey began the decline of public education in America--
when the Federal govt. made a cabinet level position for
education Americans were forced to drink the hemlock that
will surely destroy us.

The more I learn about McCarthy the more I learn about the left-leaning bias of the MSM. While Joe certainly had his demons, he was correct in identifying the alarming presence of communists in the highest level of our government. He was destroyed by the left much as Gingrich was destroyed.
Senator Joseph McCarthy was an American hero. His methods were not even close to extreme. However, as is always the case, those who attacked him and destroyed his reputation were the real extremists.
They are the leftists in the State Department, Congress, and the liberal mainstream media. It is amazing. These leftists engage in extreme character assassination, yet make it appear that their target, in this case McCarthy, is practicing the character assassination. They successfully project their sins upon the one they are accusing. It is done through "spin" mostly.
In reality, nobody McCarthy exposed as a communist was falsely accused, nobody!!! Therefore, he was not practicing any character asassination, he was instead bringing out the truth about these godless traitors. Had McCarthy succeeded, and we continued with his patriotic anti-communism mission, we would not be in the mess we are in today, FACT!
ping this one for later
As one who voted for Joe McCarthy, the first time I was old enough to vote and the last time he ran for election, I offer my opinion that the principal reason for the hatred heaped on his reputation and memory is not his tactics, but the fact that on the larger issue of Communist influence at the highest levels --- yes, the very highest levels --- of the U. S. Government, McCarthy WAS CORRECT.
After all, the perverts who invented the crime of Borking can hardly, in a logical universe, presume to complain about the tactics employed by Joe McCarthy.
Yeah, my model for raising kids would be someone who named his "Moon Unit" and "Dweezil".
NOT.
He attended (and may have even graduated from) a public high school in San Diego. ;-)
Don't forget the media Zogbyism of the 2004 Presidential Election, which attempted to manufacture "news" items designed to take down President Bush.
Whether it was biased poll numbers or hoaxed "National Guard" memos (or hoaxed Abu Ghraib "rape" photos alongside the genuine photos of men with panties on their heads), there was a Soviet style smear campaign against this administration.
The best defense is a good offense. They call conservatives "fascists" to mask their own totalitarian nature (what are you going to say, "No, you are"?).
The violence, vandalism, and physical intimidation from the left this election shows them for the rabid brownshirts that they are. They had hoped to win and wouldn't be made to atone for their crimes (history is written by the victors).
