Illegal immigrants inundate hospitals

New Jersey's escalating population of illegal immigrants is placing an ever-growing burden on the state's hospitals, which expect to lose $200 million this year on care to the underground community.

Doctors and administrators around the state are complaining that the cost of treating illegal immigrants has forced them to delay the purchase of life-saving technology or the addition of valuble staff.

And according to the New Jersey Hospital Association (NJHA) in West Windsor, the burden will only increase unless state or federal agencies step in and pay the bills.

'snip'

Given the uncertainty about how many immigrants live in the country illegally, no one can say exactly how much they cost the nations hospitals.

However, given that New Jersey's illegal aliens cost hospitals an estimated $200 million, the many millions of illegal aliens across the nation surely cost several billion dollars per year. The hospitals in just one city, Los Angeles, report that they lose $350 million a year on illegal immigrants.

Can't deport a sick person? Let's not debate the issue. Deport them after they recover with the understanding it's a one-time thing?

Before we moved a house (small 2 bdrm) was purchased across the street by a man who brings in illegals. Soon 12 to 14 were there. They boarded up the 3 car carport with cardboard, metal, whatever. Some moved in there. They built 3 sheds under 12x10 (zoning law size). from junk. Some moved in there. Some left each day for work, I assume. The one woman and babies were on welfare. They all may have been on welfare because if you are not on the payroll paying taxes, you can claim no income.

It's a mess. Totally destroys a neighborhood in about a week. And that was Southern Oregon. I can't imagine LA or Arizona.

I knew about the hospitals, and the schools, too. The realtor info astounds me! Are these rooms in private homes, zoned one family? Are they apartments or condos? I heard a term awhile back that I wasn't familiar with -"stacking'. It was an article about too many people in some communities living in two-families, one-family homes, etc. Owners were renting out attics, basements, etc. putting up sheetrock to divide rooms. Sounds like it's one in the same thing.

Aren't there occupancy code ordinances? This can go on and there's no recourse??

To be sensitive to various third world cultures, US hospitals need a separate wing designed to lessen the shock of modern medicine. A single dirty needle will serve an entire floor, windowless holes to the elements serve as nesting areas for birds. You eat what your family provides otherwise you'll starve near an empty janatorial closet. Filthy surfaces and untrained staff sit around doing nothing. In this way we can be sensitive to the needs of undocumented aliens using our hospitals.

When we complained way back here in the west we were called xenophobic bigots and racists. We were told that there was no way that the impact of a bunch of illegals could be that much. Couldn't we just all try to get along? They're just here looking for a job.

You took the words right out of my mouth, SR.

Coming SOON to a neighborhood near you, folks!

And Juana and Josita get their free maternity care. And of course a life of welfare programs after that.

Or just outsource health care like we're doing with all other jobs --- send the immigrants back home if they can't pay their bills --- and let them seek health care in Mexico where it is far far cheaper and not paid by American taxpayers.

an elementary school teacher making a sizable salary who informed me that not one of her 15 students is legally present in this country.

If she's one of those bilingual ed teachers that shouldn't surprise her --- and here bilingual ed teachers keeping the kids speaking Spanish are better paid than American teachers.

These are in 2,3 and 4 apartment structures which predominate urban/residential neighborhoods in NJ, including illegal basement apartments.

In addition, I personally know of cases involving illegal aliens involved in car accidents for which they were at fault. Of course, when one does an investigation of the North Carolina address or runs the plate for the address in cases of hit and run, SURPRISE, it does not exist or the driver is uninsured. The victim in the accident must then file a claim against his own carrier, driving up rates. A naive person in NJ would wonder why so many people from NC are enamored with NJ's communities.

I am also familiar with illegal aliens obtaining sizable personal injury awards.

True, sort of. Insurance companies are picking up on the bills, also, in many different ways. That's why insurance premiums are so high.

Two examples of which I have a hundred:

My dad died about 15 years ago in So. Cal. He had insurance when he died. We knew he was going to die from multiple myeloma. After he died the insurance company (and my mom for the deductibles) was still being billed by the hospital three DAYS after he died. My mom did get the deductibles paid via phone calls, but I don't think the insurance company did. Attorneys, et cetera.

Another example:

In Southern AZ, if you go to the hospital for an emergency, you must wait more than two hours to get emergency treatment, unless you are bleeding, having a baby, having a heart attack or a child is involved. Most of us know the only way to get emergency treatment is through an ambulance company.

I had injured my left leg badly because I fell/stepped in a hole that my gardner had dug to fix the sprinkler system. One leg was stuck in the hole. The right leg went sideways. It tore my right knee apart. Called an ambulance. Was treated immediately. Saw a doctor the next day. But I was treated for the intense pain at the hospital. Had I gone to the hospital with my husband driving, I would have waited three to five hours for treatment.

I had three more ambulance rides because of that knee not holding its own. Hit my back on a cat scratcher when my knee just gave out. Went into back spasms because of a previous injury in 1990.

One hospital charged over $2000 for an overnight visit. That did not include the ambulance ride.

Thank goodness we have hospitalization insurance.

But my point here is that we all pay for illegal immigrants through insurance, taxes, SSI and everything else.

I do not know what the answer is except that illegal immigration is wrong.

I'll make a third example just for the heck of it:

My brother-in-law was murdered by four illegal aliens in So. AZ. The illegals took a bat and beat him to death. Prior to his beating, the four illegal immigrants had beaten three other men, but none had died. All of the four victims were blue-eyed, strange, isn't it? The LEOs knew the illegal immigrants the night before my brother-in-law was murdered, but there weren't enough LEOs (not enough money) to go out and tag the four critters. Two of them were released; one of those two with bail. Both of those two went back to Mexico (I suppose). The other two were given ten years in our jails. Another taxpayers' burden, not to mention what my sister went through

There are 257,000 "undocumented" residents in MA and the AG refuses to do a thing about it, he's quoted as saying if he runs into an "undocumented" he will turn his head.

I have sent similar information to Senator Cornyn of Texas only to get back a letter telling me how wonderful the Bush plan is for immigration. Can't even get our own Texas senators to listen to the cry of the people. Makes you want to throw your hands up and walk away from the problem.

"But my point here is that we all pay for illegal immigrants through insurance, taxes, SSI and everything else"

An interesting approach with the federal government here is this:

Since illegals are entitled to free health care that is paid for ultimately by the taxpayer, then the taxpayer should be entitled to deduct 100% of any medical costs - as a mitigating measure.

The point is not to actually get the deductions, but to show the federal government that it may hit THEM in the pocketbook......

The need for 'guest workers' hasn't been established. Period.

While you are 100 percent right, some of our so called friends in government continue to believe we will follow in lockstep. This issue is getting beyond criminal.

the burden will only increase unless the taxpayers start footing the bills for illegal alian's medical care.
