They actually never rose to the challenge, small minds and ineffective leaders both.

I wouldn't go anywhere near that far, particularly with regard to Powell, who did an outstanding job on many fronts. Sure, I'm glad Powell is being replaced with someone who will likely go much farther in challenging and dismantling the culture of appeasement in the State Department, but that doesn't require that I ignore Powell's very adept negotiations with the Chinese over the surveillance plane incident, his bringing and end to the North/South conflict in Sudan which will eventually destroy the Islamist monopoly of power within the government, or that he quite possibly prevented a nuclear war by inducing Pakistan and India to stand down from an impending conflict several years ago. None of these are small things nor easily accomplished, and yet that's just the tip of the iceberg.

"......Powell did a fine job then.
And he was taking orders from someone above him,"

And who was giving Powell orders during Desert Storm - Dick Chaney! A good thing too - Powell is pacifistic.

I agree. I think he's stuck in the post-Vietnam defeatist syndrome. I'm not challenging his patriotism in any way.

Lately I've thought he might be a good head of the UN which requires someone of his mentality, his obvious caring for human suffering, and his integrity.

Sure would beat Clinton whose names been bandied about.

Powell was a mistake...

That much was clear from his performance during the first Gulf War, helping to necessitate the second one.

It was reinforced for me by listening to the audio book version of "The Commanders".

A struggle is emerging within the GOP. There are purposeful efforts being made to split the GOP as well as the rest of the country. Like it or not, we'll likely soon see coalitions forming between moderate GOP members and Democrats. Problem is, the GOP with a 2% margin of victory last November cannot afford to lose one supporter/vote.

"...he might be a good head of the UN..."

I would not have a problem with Powell as Sec'y General of the UN, but I think that this is not a position available to anyone from any of the five Permanent members of the Security Council.

I knew Powell was a mistake for Bush from the very beginning, he is as much against the USA as Kerry.

Site your source. Now I have some problems with Powell, but to compare him to kerry is really over the top...not to mention untrue.

"kind of set up to fail cause of all the liberal lifers in there"

Perfectly sums up State, and the need to change the entire concept of lifetime tenure.

Actually, it sounds exactly like the problem with tenure in higher education.

not a position available to anyone from any of the five Permanent members of the Security Council.

depends what you mean.

Contrary to popular opinion, there is no rule at all prohibiting such a candidate from being put forth by the SC for a vote in the GA.

But notice what body actually votes?

What there is is a diplomatic "understanding" that no such candidate will be put forth so that he will not be voted down by virtually the entire body of trash that is called the general assembly.
