A family of Christians who fled persecution in Egypt ran into a bloody nightmare in Jersey City - where the husband, wife and their two daughters were found knifed to death in their home yesterday.

The bodies of Hossam Armanious, 46, his wife, Amal Garas, and their two youg daughters - Sylvia, 15, and Monica, 8 - were found gagged with their throats slit at 4 a.m. yesterday inside the green, two-story, wood-frame home they moved into five years ago.

Investigators were struggling to figure out who could have slaughtered the religiously devout family.

Jersey City Police Chief Robert Troy Said police are leaning toward the suspects being at least an aquaintance, after finding no sign of break-in.

"I don't believe it was random," he said. "They probably knew their killers."

Rafique Iscandar, 51, who described himself as Armanious' best friend, said his pal also came (to America) because of the pressure of being Christian in the Muslim Egypt.

"They were afraid there," Iscandar said. "They are under siege by the government. We lived in fear."

There is a small and very strong Coptic church in our city,
and everyone here is one or two steps off the boat, anyway!

The Coptics, for whatever reason, cannot assimilate. They stay to themselves, they are the most fearful people I've ever seen. We have so many Cambodians, so many Viet boat people, so many survivors of various horrors of the 20th century.
In this place, not getting over it stands out. Those are the Coptics. Having said that, I got involved because I went to secretarial school with a daughter of a leader in the Copt community. Wonderful, gentle and deeply religious people and I am so very sad for this family and the people who loved them.

The parents still have Arabic sounding names. So the parents were probably Muslim at one time. I would still look at family members who were Muslim for a possoble "honor killing".

Just doing what they could for coptics in egypt would be enough problem for them, I'd think. The egyptian authorities get the name from the ones recieving aid, and call one of the many muhammedans in Jersey to deal with it.

I have NO doubt that a muslim will go to any lenghts and expense.....remember 9/11.... just to kill their enemies. They got that shi--y jihad idea-things stuck in their brains. The story says that the family were already Christian when they emigrated. Also, it doesn't seem likely that they would be on good terms with their relatives if there were a religious difference. There's nothing strange about an Arab having an Arabic sounding name.

Still, I hope the police haven't overlooked this point.
