HOLLYWOOD, CA, December 13, 2004
Alexander Payne's comedy "Sideways" led the nominations with seven and actor Jamie Foxx scored the most individual nominations with three when contenders for the 62nd annual Golden Globe Awards were announced December 13.
Other nomination leaders in the movie categories were "The Aviator" (six), "Closer", "Finding Neverland" and "Million Dollar Baby", each with five.
In the television categories, "Desperate Housewives" was prominent in its first season and the made-for-TV movie "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers" scored four nominations.
The Golden Globe Awards will be presented Sunday, January 16, 2005, during a star-studded ceremony broadcast live on NBC at 8 p.m. Eastern.

Here's a review segment that seems to disagree with your assessment of Vera Drake:
>Leigh makes few political points in the film. (No doubt conservatives would see the film as a horror story, this woman creeping around from house to house.) It is not an "issue" movie. It is much more about families and people, and how they support one of their own; it could just as easily about someone accused of child molestation, or who assisted suicides. The miracle of the film is that the catalyst for the emotional breakdown, the abortions, aren't just a device, they're a whole, complete film in their own right. It's what gives certain images such immediate, painful power. His film, planned as it is, consists of events that are completely random and unforeseeable to the characters, even though we, the audience expect them (it only serves to make them more devastating that we see it coming). We see an abortion; we see a couple get engaged; we see a rape; we see that someone is expecting a baby. Leigh has empathy for everyone in the film, and with the exception of three women -- Vera's sister in law, the woman who procures Vera's "patients," and the mother of one of the girls who she performs an abortion for -- he doesn't turn anyone into a villain. Even one horrific psychiatrist interview grows into something where we realize, haughty as he is, he's not exactly "out to get" this girl who wants help (although the scene hits home the difference involved in getting abortions performed by doctors and on the street).<
And, as for Million Dollar Baby, it doesn't matter that the "Mercy Killing" is presented as a "tortured choice", it still promotes it as a viable option.
What piece did the networks run opposite the Golden Globes a few years back? Wasn't it the Juanita Broaddrick interview with Lisa Myers?
So should we page CAL?
The position against abortion is presented very forcefully. The titular character is a dimwitted woman who doesn't think about the consequence of her actions. Actually, the film got positive reviews from Vatican Radio and conservative critic James Bowman. As for 'Million Dollar Baby', if you mean merely depicting something is promoting it then you're right. It's certainly not taken lightly nor is the opposition to it (a priest) downplayed or demonized.
Wikipedia seems to back up the assertion. The Hollywood Foreign Press Assoc. is a tiny group (only about 90 members). It's really silly that these awards are taken so seriously.
be nice. I think she's a Republican.
have not seen any of these Movies either, Frankly I would rather watch old clips of Andy Griffith or the Patridge Family.
Yu know the leading Men now are pretty sorry, proably because there are so many out and about faries in tinseltown.
He's Gay and she looks like a Bullrider..
I wish we could protest the Academy Awards on Oscar day for not nominating The Passion, I would do it...
I though that on TV they should have people that look and speak so it is pleasant to watch them. Rivers with her stitched up face and scrappy voice sure does not hold my attention for more than flick of a remote.
Then Briget Jones, with her sour mouth mimic makes my tea sour without lemon. Is she sucking on the lemon all the time? Another click on the remote.
Oscar noms haven't been announced yet. Will be early in the morning on 1/25. There are actually protests there every year for various reasons. Have been for many years.
I know all this, but I still LOVED that movie. It's incredible. And, don't forget, Clint Eastwood is a Republican, so we really should support him.
BTTT.
Movie fanatics of the world unite! Oh yeah, This is my kind of thread.
The Globes are a bit of a pale imitation of the Academy Awards (still THE big boy of all movie award ceremonies), but since my appetite for Oscar cannot be sated until the nominations are announced in the early morning of Jan. 25, the Globes will have to tide me over for the next 8-9 days.
Of all the nominated films in all the nominated categories, I'm rooting the most for Michael Gondry's absolutely brilliant Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind to win the Best Comedy/Musical Award. Hopefully they will honor Kate Winslet's riveting, color-coded lead performance and Charlie Kauffman's endlessly original script as well.
I'd also looove to see Jaime Foxx take home Best Actor for Ray, and Natalie Portman win Best Supporting Actress for her sexy, solid work in Closer. For Best Supporting Actor, either Clive Owens' vicious turn in Closer or David Carradine's ultra-cool performance in Kill Bill: Vol 2 will suit me just fine.
So, anyone else watching Joan and Melissa on the TV Guide channel?
I have it on but don't know if it's tape delayed or LIVE.
They both look great, my husband thinks Joan is drunk (he could be right--she just called Jessica Walter Barbara Walters).
Jessica recalled winning a Golden Globe back in '71 for "Play Misty for Me", a movie I happen to like a lot.
You got that right, pay to play guide.
Star Jones and her gay husband (not like there's anything wrong with that)
