Ex-Raider Robbins Shot by Police in Fla.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - Former pro football player Barret Robbins was hospitalized Sunday after he was shot by a police officer investigating a burglary at a South Beach office, authorities said.

The one-time Pro Bowl center sustained "multiple gunshot wounds" in the torso Saturday night from Miami Beach police investigating a report of a robbery in the administrative office of a building that houses a nightclub, a gym and a jewelry store, police spokesman Bobby Hernandez said.

Robbins was inside the office and had a "violent struggle" with detectives before Detective Mike Muley shot the former Oakland Raiders lineman, Hernandez said.

"The officer was literally fighting for his life, trying to get Mr. Robbins from getting his gun. That's when the shots rang out," Hernandez said.

Robbins, 31, was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Muley suffered minor head injuries in the scuffle and was treated at a hospital and released.

Hernandez said Robbins was considered a burglary suspect and was expected to face a charge of battery on a police officer. He said police were trying to determine whether Robbins would also face trespassing or burglary charges.

Robbins had not yet been charged in the case because authorities had not been able to interview him. "We just have to figure out what he was doing there," Hernandez said.

Robbins was arrested last month in San Francisco for hitting a security guard at a night club.

The often-troubled player is best remembered for disappearing the night before the 2003 Super Bowl in San Diego. He spent Super Bowl Sunday in a hospital and later acknowledged that he had stopped taking his medicine for depression and bipolar disorder. The Raiders lost 48-21 to Tampa Bay.

Robbins was released by Oakland in July, a week after he and two other players were fined three game checks for testing positive for the steroid THG.

This guy has multiple screws loose.

Steriods + alcoholism = bad juju.

Looks like he's also somewhat bullet-resistant.

"multiple gunshot wounds" in the torso

He's very lucky if he survives.

Let's hope that "multiple gunshot wounds" in the torso do for him what stopped taking his medicine for depression and bipolar disorder and testing positive for the steroid THG didn't do.

Let's hope he can pck up the pieces of his shattered life, and find true guidance in the Lord.

And they think he will be able to tell them?

One would think that this would be a wake-up call of sorts --should he survive.

I posted this because it was an interesting story and hadn't been posted yet. I figured that there are enough football fans out there who would read this.

Personally, I didn't know who the guy was. I've given up on professional sports for some time now. I just can't bear to watch anymore. I have no desire to root for a team, any team really, who's players I find more and more to be overpaid, selfish, repugnant individuals.

Not every athelete, mind you, but so many of them are just despicable people and I will not take part in elevating them to this undeserved "hero" status because they can throw a ball.

Professional sports in America has become a disgrace.

You don't find these types on Bill Belichick's Patriots. Even some of the supposed "bad eggs" we've reformed.

So there ya go... someone to cheer for at 4:30 EST.

It's been my experience that....many , many perps that were shot or otherwise seriously injured and hospitalized were NOT arrested. That way the County or City wasn't liable for their hospital bill.

As oppose to the "bad egg", Peyton Manning? If you like good guys, you can root for the Colts too. Now then, everything is even. May the best team win.
