SpongeBob in crosshairs

The New York Times

WASHINGTON — On the heels of electoral victories to bar same-sex marriage, some influential conservative Christian groups are turning their attention to a new target: the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants.

James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, said that SpongeBob's creators have enlisted SpongeBob in a “pro-homosexual video,” in which he appeared with other children's television characters.

The makers of the video, Dobson said, plan to mail it to thousands of elementary schools this spring to promote a “tolerance pledge” that includes tolerance for differences of “sexual identity.”

You got to be kidding right? Clinton won because Christian conservatives stayed home. Wake up its been reported everywhere that this was the case.

Huh? Clinton was specifically targeted by Christian conservatives - especially in 1996. Who told you that they stayed home?

Michael Barrone has shown that Christian conservatives voted in the same numbers that they did in 2000 so they didn't "elect GWB".

While most conservatives are also Christian, most don't consider themselves "Christian Conservatives" (aka Theocons) that vote on religious grounds. If that wasn't the case, why did Keyes get 17% of the vote in a state where Bush got over 40%? Keyes made hardcore Christian values the centerpiece of his campaign and he was running against a very liberal, secular candidate. Unless these theocons just didn't vote for Keyes because he is black, they must not exist in any great numbers.

The fact is that Theocons can't even be counted on to show up. Someone posted in one of the Kid Rock threads that Rove doesn't even consider them likely voters.

The Theocons chase away all of the fiscal conservatives and then don't show up to vote because news is released of Bush's DUI 30 years ago.

BTW, what did Theocons have against GHWB and Bob Dole that made them not show up to defeat Clinton in 92 and 96?

I know a lot of people who voted for Bush who enjoy "vulgar" culture. They voted for him because of security and because they don't trust the Democrats.

< raises hand > One. 8>)

Irony of ironies, by fighting the terrorists, George W. Bush is protecting "vulgar" culture. Meanwhile, the left kisses the terrorist a** that would destroy them first.

As far as Wildmon is concerned, he reminds me of Jesse Jackson.

A big government statist who likes to make a bunch of noise to scare people into sending him money - while really doing nothing.

>>As far as it promoting homosexuality, I'm sorry but as I said before, I don't think any right thinking person is going to look at a lifestyle that leaves them open to verbal abuse and physical attacks from utter strangers and say "oh yeah, that's what I want baby". No-one lives in that much of a vacuum.<<

Please let me explain to you my take on "Gay" people. I have been friends with lesbians and homosexual males. My sister came "out of the closet" after two marriages, four children and I made her the Godmother of my oldest daughter. Yikes!

Every last one of the "Gays" I know DO choose that lifestyle for the reason you stated. They are very "Look at me!" people and adore being martyrs. In the past (and I'm talking 1979 or 1980), this may have been true. But now, these people revel in the attention.

"Dobson's becoming nearly as big a joke as Donald Wildmon."

Tell me. What's so good about using cartoon characters to indoctrinate my kids to be pro-homosexual?

"I wonder if Wildmon and Dobson have issues with Porky Pig and Donald Duck (partial nudists) or Bugs Bunny (cross-dressing and male on male flirtation)?"

We all knew that was all a part of a cartoon story that one character used to trick another character.

You can tell the difference between reality and fantasy, can't you?

He put libertarians in charge of the FCC.

not sure who you are referring to, but would NOT be surprised.
"the soul of the republican party is libertarianism" was something Reagan said on several occasions.

If this is true, it's pretty sick.

"Libertarians should be concern about the liberty of those who do not want their children taught gay-is-okay in school. It's a violation of the moral and religious rights of those students and parents who disagree."

I guess libertarianism means turning over your kid's indoctrination to any sexual deviant who comes along, while deriding anyone who dares try to impose their own repressive "values".

Count me out.

I fail to see the problem.

of course you do.

that is because you fail to realize that some of these so-called "true" conservatives secretly, or NOT so secretly, support the old testament proscription of capital punishment of homosexuals, prostitutes, adulterors and adultresses, via stoning.

aka: murder under our current laws.

There is no room for compromise on this one. I bet some DU loonies are on this thread as trolls.

Gee, no compromise on sponge bob?
And those of us who can't see the demon in the spongeman, are liberal trolls?

Funny comment coming from a newbie.
Freerepublic has always had a very, very strong, 'GET government OUT of our lives as much as possible' contingent.

Goes all the way back, amongst true conservatives, to the Reagan years, and continued up to and through the clintong years. It continues no matter WHO is raising the taxes and writing the ever increasing burden of laws upon rules upon statutes upon item after item.

Many of us didn't like government intrusion way back when Ronald Reagan asked for our votes, and still don't like it now.

It's funny seeing newer freepers these days, calling folks who reject the State as their lord and savior from sin... trolls. Some freepers, just don't worship the same god as the 'government must protect and restrict society or we will all commit sin' crowd.

Well, Is the story true. Is this what the creators of Spong Bob doing?

That is no joke. Someone has to stand up and get the word out.
