Former President Jimmy Carter was a target of the clandestine lobby campaign launched by an Iraqi-American businessman who admitted he was paid millions of dollars to undermine U.S. policy toward Iraq, it was revealed yesterday.Virginia-based oilman Samir Vincent earlier this week became the first person to plead guilty in the U.N. oil-for-food scandal. He had several contacts with the former Democratic president in a bid to weaken and eventually repeal sanctions against Saddam Hussein's regime, investigators said.
Contacts with Vincent dated back to 1999, when Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, hosted a delegation of Iraqi religious leaders at their home in Plains, Ga.
The Iraqis were in the country to lobby American religious leaders including the Rev. Billy Graham against U.N. sanctions on Iraq, imposed after Saddam's 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
Vincent organized the trip.

Carter, who was in Washington to attend President Bush's inauguration yesterday, could not be reached for comment.

Among Vincent's American contacts was former GOP vice-presidential nominee and ex-New York Rep. Jack Kemp, who acknowledged working with him on a proposal to ease the economic sanctions if Iraq would readmit U.N. weapons inspectors.

FYI ..
I'm sure the folks who scream "Haliburton!" at every opportunity will be coming down on Saint Jimmy of the Dictators for this. Suuuuuuure.
Told you so....:-)
Carter also befriended Arafat and wrote his speeches for him along with giving him advice on how to dress so he would be more appealing.
I wonder if any Oil For Food money ended up at the Carter Center?
"I wonder if any Oil For Food money ended up at the Carter Center?"
I guess that's the $64,000 question?
This bum has worked tirelessly to undermine this country to its enemies.
It was my first election and I was young and foolish. That is my excuse, and I'm sticking to it.
In retrospect, there were signs that he had problems - his micro-managing while he was governor here, the fact that friends of my parents' didn't like him - but I was 18 and a college freshman out of state, and I wasn't on the ball like I should have been.
Do those "Christian friends" know that he has renounced the Southern Baptists and quit his old church?
I would be able to die a happy man.
Probably the same friends that were so delighted that Bill Clinton and Al Gore, two Southern Baptist were going to be in the White House. I have family that were So. Baptist missionaries for 40 years and they loved Bill Clinton and hate George Bush. It really hurts my heart.
Congratulations for learning from that experience? Of course I was not old enough to vote in the late 70s - and I'm not American.
Goes to show being a Christian is great - but not a good enough reason in itself to serve the nation. I know there are many Christians who hold to the immoral belief of pacifism. I guess this came out of the 60s and 70s.
You must be kidding me. How can a Christian promote an unrepentent murderer? Methinks Carter may be simply a fake - like Sharpton and Jackson.
I think these Christian friends, although well meaning, just are very ignorant when it comes to men of this world.
They probably take him at face value, with the Sunday School business and Habitat work and all, and figure he's a "good Christian man." Especially if they don't follow politics.
His foreign policy expertise was pathetic and I'll not forget the loss of lives in his ill fated rescue plan for our hostages.
our first house in 1979 had a 15.5% mortgage. Imagine that!!!
We bought our present house at 13%.......refinanced to 10%, then 7 5/8 and now 4.65.........worse economy since Herbert Hoover, right?
>The bright side is that I have never voted for a
democrat for president again.<
Not the first time a Christian turned out to be a profound disappointment, nor will it be the last, unfortunately. I could never have voted for Jimah Cotta simply because I couldn't stand the guy on general principles. The only Democrat I could even imagine voting for would be Joe Lieberman, and I reserve the right to sit that one out, too.
Carter is a traitor. Period.
Slate has an article from 2002 which documents his subversive activities.
An excerpt: "Carter went further than merely lobbying Congress to oppose military action or speaking out in an effort to tilt popular opinion against the coming war. He used his status as a former president to engage in foreign policy, a deliberate effort to subvert the democratic process.
In November 1990, two months after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, Carter wrote a letter to the heads of state of the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. He urged the countries to drop their support for Bush's proposed military solution"
Here is Slate's web address: http://slate.msn.com/id/2065887/
I suspect Carter and Clinton were working behind the scenes to get the UN members to vote against going into Iraq as well.
Joe LIEberman who was complicit in disenfranchising our military votes during the Florida fiasco. That Joe LIEberman?
Hey, I haven't signed on for the duration you know. Joe Lieberman seems more statemanlike than most others do today. I reserved my opinion on him because I know very little about him to date.
The man is a liar, spreading lies.
He was in the room when they discussed not counting the military votes that came from overseas.
His principles are for sale.
'Nuff said.
Oh, by the way, if you had to make the choice between a bad Republican (RINO) or a conservative Democrat, who do you think that Democrat might be?
Zell Miller.
