PM threatens snap election: Says he'd battle Harper over polygamy warning
National Post ^ | 22 January 2005 | Robert Fife and Anne Dawson

Paul Martin yesterday threatened to call a general election after Conservative leader Stephen Harper warned that passage of the Liberal government's promised same-sex legislation will lead to polygamy.

The threat escalated an already ugly battle over gay marriage that increasingly shows just how divided Canadians are on the issue. In recent days, religious leaders including Cardinal Aloysius Ambrozic, the Roman Catholic archbishop of Toronto, have joined the debate and urged the Prime Minister to maintain the traditional heterosexual definition of marriage.

I find it hard to imagine calling a special election over homosexual marriage. I find it harder to imagine that Paul Martin assumes he would overwhelmingly win such an election. But this is Canada. Is this its time of troubles and Balkanization.

Martin knows that the Liberals have successfully corrupted the voting process in Canada. He knows the outcome before the votes are taken.

It's a regular third-world pestulential hellhole up there anymore.

I think he should go ahead and call it. The reason he would threaten it is because he so incompetent. We have something to gain.

1. The ethnic voters who voted for him last time is adamently opposed to SSM

2. The right wing liberals who also oppose SSM would ditch the liberals.

For him to call an election, the SSM bill would have to be a confidence vote in the House of Commons.
In reality it's nothing but rhetoric, he is only threatening his MPs.
Dictatorship eh?

Canadians will vote for anything the Liberals tell them to vote for.

And they'll be grateful for it.

Currently there are many Liberal MPs who promised their constituents in the last election that they would uphold the traditional definition of marriage and fight for it. Many of these areas have large ethnic voters, if they should fail to keep their promises that would be the nail in their coffin for them. So, I dare Martin to call the election and then end up committing political suicide.

He's more incompetent than Cretch.
BTW, he's now insisting that he would not call the election.

What is such a shame is when the majority of people, who without any morals, can pass laws that allow people to engage in immoral behavior.
The same thing is only a few years away here in the US.
We are only one president away from that happening.

Paul Martin would NEVER call an election over the issue.
The truth of the matter is that he will be FORCED to, because his government is in a minority position, and a non-confidence vote can happen at any time.

While the liberals do have an almost dictatorship hold on Canada because of unfair and unequal representation in Canada among it's provinces, he knows he could loose a snap election, due to ever more corruption of his liberal caucus being exposed. 2/3 of Canadians consistantly vote AGAINST the liberals, but due to liberal strongholds having the most seats, they manage to remain in power with only 30% of the popular vote.

Lets hope that the end of the liberal dictatorship in Canada is close to an end. If not, Western Canadians can ask the USA to liberate them.

Hmmm... West Canada hates him for the marraige stuff, East Canada hates him for the oil clawback stuff, Quebec hates him because its Quebec and they are messed up in there... No wonder he rethought the election thing so fast.

That is so true. Many need to remember that. Would Canada be in the same predicament if Stephen Harper were the PM? [/rhetorical]

Sounds like Paul Martin is going to run on snap thong panties. Now there's a Canuck campaign theme! (laughing)
