But for the meantime, he has a lot of friends, does not smoke or drink (which I did at his age), does not use drugs... It's amazing that we've sunk so far that parents today brag about their children that don't smoke, drink, or do drugs. Thirty years ago, it was no big deal. Today, it's the exception, not the norm.

His essays are always wonderful. He expresses so eloquently what many of us think and feel. He appreciates the basic and simple gifts of life...family, freedom, and beloved pets, to name a few. Thanks, Ben, for making the world a better one for your being in it!

Thanks for posting this and pinging me.
I'll have to ask. How do you personally know Mr. Stein?

Thank you, God. The man who said that the paralyzed could walk if a Democrat were in the White House will not be Vice President. The man who mocked Iyad Allawi, Premier of Iraq, who risks his life every day to bring about a decent society, will not be President. The party that believes that it's perfectly cool to take a living baby from its mother's body and then pierce its skull with scissors and kill it while it screams will not be in charge of the Executive Branch (as they are of the media). Thank you, God. Doesn't seem too self-centered here. Seems like serious social criticism.
Read some of his books if you want even more social criticism leavened with humor.

If Stein is a "self-centered Boomer bore", I'd hate to think what you are.

I appreciated your remarks to comment 8. I was not sure if the other poster was jiving us, or that he thinks very little of Ben. I have enjoyed all of Ben's articles -- they usually give me pause.

Yeah, I read that, and it's certainly a great paragraph.
But in general, he writes far too much fluff that gets us nowhere.

Please tell your friend that I consider his writings a treasure. He reminds me to be humble, pick my battles wisely and value life's true blessings.
Not sure if he knows that he has that kind of effect on some folks.

I like Ben Stein, but I'm trying to figure out just what in the
hell he has to be fearful of! Things happen in the course of a normal life due to the aging process. Well? Join the club, Ben!
Other than that, he's absolutely cruising, as he keeps insisting on reminding us. He's awfully out of touch if he's really fearful; millions of other people have things to really fear.
Sheesh, Ben. Get a grip; you've had, and have, it pretty damn good.

Well, go ahead and "think." You'll probably never figure it out.

Ben Stein is one of the finest, if not the finest, essayists in the country. (The essay he wrote about his dog Trixie for the American Spectator (about 10 years ago) still stands, in my mind, as the best ever written about a man's love for his dog.) Thanks for posting this.
To: lawgirl
I'm a cynical SOB, but Ben Stein is always just sentimental and moving enough that the President's speechwriters could learn a lesson from him, as could Peggy Noonan (1000 points of light? Touched the face of God? Sheesh).
You and I disagreed on Peggy's latest--perhaps not on Peggy, however--but I'm glad we can agree on Ben's talent. I hate discovering a member of my wife's house is against me. :)
