Years ago (college), while watching the weather report on Today, for the fourth day in a row "isolated severe thunderstorms" were shown hovering (if memory serves) in the Mississippi Valley. When I remarked to my buddy that these storms didn't appear to be all that isolated, as they extended for half the length of the river, he said, "by isolated, he meant 'nowhere near New York City'". Sure enough, when those storm systems started to move toward the NE, the weather guy (before Willard Scott) seemed to be pretty worried about it.
Bin Laden acts on his own behalf, but also gets plenty of contributions from other rich sheiks and wannabees in the Kingdom. They're the ones who are trying to overthrow the royal family, even if they're not aware of it (IOW, they may think the money is going to terrorists operating in Iraq, or in Israel, or Afghanistan, or Europe).
People with short memories say the US is corrupt and evil to help maintain the current powers in Saudi Arabia. But they would have also urged that we pull the rug out from under the Shah of Iran.
I'm actually not sure that Bin Laden is trying to overthrow the Saudi royal family.
In a 1/06/05 column published in techcentralstation.com, Tom Schwartz says that there is a definite reltionship between Bin Laden and the royal family.
I think you'll find his article worth a look:
