HA!... a system that presents like minded people with awards so that they can hail themselves as great award winning minds is exactly what the Oscars, the Grammys and most of the awards shows are about. I am sorry if I am talking over your head here. It is exactly the same thing.

If you like American movies then there is an intrinsic interest in seeing what the artists who make them think is their best work. Cinematagraphers don't get much recognition in the general public except for the Oscars. I'm always happy for the attention they get this one time in the year.

You are absolutely right. Leigh goes out of his way to be objective and not making zealouts out of pro life and law enforcement officials. It's up to the audience to decide.

Obviously AMPAS is not completely made up of stupid people. Because of the response Passion had received from audiences ($300 million domestic box office, making it the highest grossing independent film of all time), to ignore it completely would have spelled bad news for them.

Well I will give you that. I do not care for a majority of American movies- and I think Hollywood has become a den of political activists-, much worse than ever before, therefore I can not, nor will not support them in anyway. If they understood that they were entertainers and nothing more, most with half a brain, then I would really care less what types of awards they give themselves.

Oh wait I couldn't care less than I do now.

But I understand that what the actors and film makers think of themselves can be very important and serious stuff to some people.

Yes, Best Director. But I lost all faith in the Oscars when Saving Private Ryan, the best film of 1998 (and the best film of the 1990's, in my opinion) lost out to a pansy film like Shakespeare In Love.

I'm disappointed that "Hotel Rwanda" wasn't nominated for Best Picture. Can't have a movie that casts the Clinton's in bad light, can we?

F9/11 getting shut out is a big deal.

Only to Michael Moore. The film did not get nominated in any other category because Moore only submitted it in one: Best Picture.

I actually think Schindler's List was the best film of the 90s! :-) I think it didnt win BP because SL had won just 5 years earlier. But I think they made the right choice that year. Spielberg got a Directing Oscar but the film itself...with a mediocre and cliched script didn't win.

The only categories where you need submission is Best Foriegn Film and Best Documentary. Everything else is up to the whims of the Academy.

You did not see the movie, obviously, or you have something personal against Spielberg....

I think art is an important part of any culture. The great american films are some of the great American art. And, actors aside, there are very intelligent people involved. Coppola and Scorsese have Master's Degrees for example.

Shakespeare in Love was a wonderful movie. Any movie filled with his language has got to be good just from that.
And it was very funny.

Schindler's List was a hell of a film, no question. However, it did not have the impact that Saving Private Ryan had on me.

That film left me sitting in the theater long after the final credit rolled and the screen darkened. I was shaken, feeling like I had just been kicked in the stomach. In fact, because my wife chose not to see it, I felt the need to talk about my experience with someone who had, and was forced to go online to do so.

Johnny Depp is good in Neverland, but the Oscars needs to add an award for best performance by a child under age 12.

Then explain the campaigns studios create at the end of every year to get their films nominated.

I am sure you have seen them: FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION. That is the route Moore took. He took a gamble, and lost, fortunately for America.

I know a lot of people responded to it that way. I just thought it didn't add anything to the discourse about that subject. And the framing device at Arlington was completely un-needed and dramatically superfluous. At least the epilogue in SL was with the actual people.
