Venezuela's Chavez seeks armed conflict with the USA
Vcrisis ^ | 24.01.05 | Aleksander Boyd

I got to see a bit of the presidential spiel yesterday and I noticed that Chavez has lost composure; his normal coherent-self wasn’t there; the rhythm and pitch of his voice have abandoned him; he's absolutely convinced that the hour of his rendezvous with history has finally arrived in the form of an open conflict; be it with Colombia or the USA.

Do not forget Jack Kemp. He was also in Chavez's corner.

There's over three hundred million people in Latin America.

The majority of them are illiterate cannon fodder easily controlled by the Marxists who run the show in most of the place.

That's a lot of mice.

"Hugo Chavez does not merit martyrdom but a cell in an ADX prison, a la John Gotti."

Chavez is not a brave man, but I don't think he is leaving office alive.

And .. so does Chris Dodd and some other idiot senator who chastized Dr. Rice for suggesting Chavez was anything other than a steller person.

Mary Anastasia O'Grady (Wall Street Journal) is, IMHO, the best analyst we have on Latin America. She's the only one who seems to take Chavez seriously, too.

BTW, were you aware that Zapatero had planned to visit Chavez on his tour through LatAm this week(where he is visiting Lula, Kirchner and Lagos)? ZP wanted to finalize a contract for VZ to buy a military ship and 20 patrol boats for the VZ navy. Colombia lodged a formal objection, so in theory he is not going to VZ. However, nowhere did I read that Spain has cancelled the contract, so I'd say VZ is definitely arming itself.

doesn't Colombia have its hands full with FARC?

There have been some articles posted recently which suggest a FARC - Venezuela connection.

It's quite possible that Chavez has been assisting the rebels, and knows that soon he will answer for his treachery.

Ugo Chavez should start a war with the United States. When our military guns the commie s.o.b. down, there will fewer and less effective Senate investigations if it happens while UGO is "defending" the presidential palace. Arrivaderci, UGO!!!!!!

Interesting, I had not heard that. I need to start combing through LA newspapers and articles on the region again.

Do a FR keyword search for "Colombia".

You'll get a number of them.

Rerun of "The Mouse That Roared"

Wrong analogy. The folks in the Mouse That Roared were harmelss, looking to lose a war with us so that they could get foreign aid from the generous Americans (we always give aid to the countries we beat in wars, don't you know?). Unfortunately for them they somehow managed to win their war with us. Not a likely outcome with old Hugo, nor is he harmless in any way shape or form. He would kill and eat the people of the Duchy of Grand Fenwick, starting with the Duchess.

The image that comes to mind for me from literature is from C S Forester's Horatio Hornblower books, specifically the character of El Supremo from Beat to Quarters. The mad dictator, sending his peasent army off to die by the thousands, while crucifying any who dare questions any of his insane ravings. Sounds like Hugo to me.

Of course, instead of Captain Horatio Hornblower in the Lydia, we'll have Capt. James Symonds and CVN76, the USS Ronald Reagan and it's battle group. Don't think Hugo's Migs will fare too well in that little fracas.

Yes!!! I knew Chavez reminded me of someone. You've hit it right on the head (pity we can't do the same with Hugo).
