Freedom at Sea, Too!

“There is only one force of history that can break the reign of hatred and resentment, and expose the pretensions of tyrants, and reward the hopes of the decent and tolerant, and that is the force of human freedom.” George W. Bush, January 20, 2005.

As noteworthy as what President Bush said in this and similar passages of his remarkable second inaugural is what he did not say. In particular, he did not declare the force upon which we must increasingly depend for “the survival of liberty in our land” to be the United Nations or multilateralism or supranational government. Rather, Mr. Bush said the critical determinant of our future well-being will be the “success of liberty in other lands.” And that success will depend in no small measure on the United States playing the role that its history, values and vital interests have made it uniquely suited to play:

I have not heard about this from anyone but Frank Gaffney and Monica Crowley. This "Law of the Sea Treaty" is something that apparently our leaders are trying to keep fairly quiet, I cannot see where this could be anything but bad for the U.S. If you agree write and call our fearless leaders asap, before they enact it under our radar.

I wasn't aware that congress critters listened to the people anymore. Afterall, they and the supreme court know what's best for the subjects.

It takes 2/3 of the Senate to pass a treaty. Do we have 33 conservatives to block this. I hope we do.

Thanks for posting this.

Dubya is my president, too. However as of late, he is terrifying me. What Condi said as a rep of the pres, on this, shocked me.

I would have thought this to be an excellent time to exercise his veto for the first time. Apparently not. Do we have 33 conservatives to block this? Who knows. This treaty has been around for a while, why try to pass it now if conservatives are not on board.

Thank you. Its at least a relief to see that others are seriously concerned about this as well.

I will take some time tomorrow to look through some of the MANY articles.

Libertarianize the US!

It takes 2/3 of the Senate to pass a treaty.

Theoretically. But not with the deception the GOP has demonstrated they are capable of using in order to bolster the positions of the UN and the State Dept.

Read how the UN Desertification Treaty was deliberately slipped through the Senate in the wee hours of the morning with no recorded vote by the GOP majority. Original story from World Net Daily, posted here on FR. See posts #8 and 9:

Rick Santorum is my Senator and I was shocked at his reply to my letter to him on the LOST. In essence he said it had the support of the Senate committee and the president, and inferred that it would likely be affirmed by the Senate. This was around September or so of last year.

Here's a hot link to my previous FR posting of Henry Lamb's articles on how the Senate slipped through an equally contentious UN treaty with no debate and no recorded vote. Posts #8 and #9:

That's frightening.

Call both your Senators and object. (Not that it will make any difference. On this UN treaty, "The fix is in").

Just damn!

Didn't see that one. (the desertification treaty) I'm constantly amazed at how little the aristocracy in this counry consider us in what they do. Someday, all this stuff is going to come home to roost, and it ain't gonna be pretty for some.

LOST is going to pass too, most likely with similar methods being employed. The same method was used to pass the original "assault weapons ban".

I think one solution for this is that voice votes be completely abandoned. There should be a roll call vote on every single bill passed. Additionally, the full text of every single bill should be read, word-for-word before it is voted upon. Maybe then, we'll see less insane law come out of congress.

Yet, despite these and numerous other problems, Secretary of State-designate Condoleezza Rice last week responded to pressure from Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Richard Lugar (Indiana Republican) by saying, "The convention [LOST] as it now stands serves our national security interests, serves our economic interests ... and we very much want to see it go into force."
