No Homework? Students Could End Up In Court

New Policy For Habitual Offenders

POSTED: 12:20 pm EST January 27, 2005

DELTA, Ohio -- Some northwest Ohio middle school students who don't do their homework could find themselves in front of a judge.

School officials in the Pike-Delta-York district have enacted a new homework policy that they say is aimed at a small group of students who routinely miss assignments.

A student who habitually fails to turn in homework can be suspended for three days.

Principal Dennis Ford said a second offense could lead to the student being declared unruly for disobedience in a juvenile court, which carries the possibility of probation.

Ford said the school has tried a number of ways to convince students that homework is important but none has worked.

How about throwing the teachers in jail if the kids habitually fail?

That would make about as much sense as jailing the kids.

Where are the parents? Why is this teacher failing the students?

How about we just make all the kids govt employees and then nobody will expect them to do their work.

Suspending kids for 3 days for not doing their homework is a sure fire way to educate them allright.--- Sarcasm---

They have kids in these classes who are truly unruly and they let them slide to get at the homework skippers.

What a stupid idea , How about just sending a note home to the parents. If the Parents dont care suspension isnt going to help the kid.

Your suggestion has merit. In addition, it will ensure that those filling the government jobs have the appropriate levels of training.

What it's coming down to is, criminalize everybody but the govt employed. Slavery being illegal, the govt just has to take prisoners.

Don't put the blame on the teacher. I've been a teaching assistant for the past four years at a University, and students require this kind of incentive. The professor of the course is really good. I've had him for a couple of courses myself. But over the four years, the level of compitency of the students is reaching unprecedented lows. I don't know who or what is to blame, but this is an overall trend that can't continue. I understand certain students will always be the bad apples, but to have a trend forming is not acceptable. And the funny thing, education is one of the only things were students want less for their money.

Don't put the blame on the teacher.

Don't blame the X. I'm an X and X's are always the good guys. Even if I do spell it 'compitency'.

I'm not saying all teachers. There are good ones and bad ones. Likewise with students. But there are also ways to motivate students to learn.

You can't blame the students only, is my argument. Blame has to be placed with parents and the school, as well.

I didn't say I was a teacher, I'm a TA. Big difference. But the teachers are not always the ones to blame. Students try to find any excuse not to do work these days. And I'll reiterate my point, education is the only thing that people want less for their money.

I completely agree, but it is amazing at the level of apathy students have for their own future at times.

I meant some students, not all students in the previous reply.

It has ever been so, eh?

Ford said the school has tried a number of ways to convince students that homework is important but none has worked.

Maybe this is the reason.

Last week I was taking care of my niece. She is ten and has about an hour and a half of homework every night and a great deal of it required adult help. I asked her teacher why she had so much, (thinking that maybe she just wasn't doing it in class) and was told casually, "Oh, we do that so parents will be forced to spend time involved in their children's lives."

My mouth dropped open. And then her mouth dropped open when I blurted out, "Just what in the name of Hannah makes you think that is something that is any business of yours?"

Geeze, people! How about just fail them?! Homework is part of the grade. If they don't do it, they fail. Criminy, school has changed.

Most of these kid's parents are private sector employees. Seems the parents don't do their work (parenting) either. On the other hand, a lot of government employees send their kids to private school and check on/help with homework. Lower expectations, indeed.
