Democrat Backs Supplemental Social Security Accounts
(Update1)

Omaha On Bush Agenda
Bush To Make 6th Visit
President plans sixth stop in metro

Details are slowly emerging about the president's trip to Nebraska next week. He's expected to be in downtown Omaha, at a location yet to be announced. This will be President Bush's sixth visit to the metro since taking office.

The president was here three times in 2001. First, to push his tax cut, next to throw out the first pitch of the College World Series, and he was then briefly at Offutt Air Force Base immediately after the terrorist attacks of September 11th.

The president was back in 2003 to rally support for his economic stimulus package and just last fall he landed in Omaha for a campaign rally in Council Bluffs.

Republicans describe Nebraska as the reddest of the red states and that makes this a comfortable stop for Bush.

Nebraska GOP Chair David Kramer says, "People really like him here and he feels that. He feeds off it, so he likes coming to places where he gets a warm welcome."

The president pitches more than baseball when he comes to Omaha. His first visit was to promote his tax cut plan and lobby Nebraska's lone Democrat in Washington, Senator Ben Nelson, to support the package.

Mr. Bush was here again in 2003 hoping to get Nelson's vote for his economic stimulus plan and he comes to Omaha next week looking for Nelson's support of his Social Security reform package.

Kramer says, "I think Senator Nelson would do well to listen to what the president has to offer."

Senator Nelson tells us, "It's no secret that they would like to talk to me about their Social Security plan. And when I know what the plan is, more than an idea or two, I'm more than willing to sit down and talk about it."

Nelson says his bottom line is that the Social Security Trust Fund is not weakened. He wants to be certain that Social Security will be there for current beneficiaries and young people down the road.

We're told that the president's visit will be open to the public but expect it to be a ticketed event with details to be released shortly.

Security restructuring must include some ``tweaking'' of the program, such as raising the retirement age...

Raise it to 105 and stop taking money out of people's paychecks...

The story doesn't support the headline that this thread was given. Nelson is just saying he'll listen.

Ben Nelson is a Zell Miller clone. He's a conservative Democrat in a Republican state. He wants to be re-elected in '06, so its not surprising he's bucking his party by backing private Social Security accounts.

Most Democrats have come out against it. In the end, if the price is right, Nelson will back the President.

Nelson knows where his bread is buttered and it is not with the wacko lefties. He stays as close to the middle as possible and sometimes wanders over to the right quite a bit. For the most part, he is pretty well liked out here.

Looks like President Bush is trying to peel off Red State Democrats. I wouldn't be surprised if his next visit is to Colorado to get Ken Salazar on board as well.

Having read the full story, I'd say my point still stands. Nelson has made no commitment whatever, except to listen.

And even at that, it sounds like he'll be hard to bring aboard. Especially telling, perhaps, is his professed view that his constituents in Nebraska have no interest in reforming Social Security. This may well be true. And moderate Dems tend to want cover from their constituents (or to need pressure from their constituents) on those rare occasions when they work with us.

Chuck Hagel has a more conservative record that Nelson, that alone makes me dubious of Nelson, he seems like just a deal maker type.

Since I'm on the email list from the DNC, I thought anyone interested in the "spirit of bipartisanship" emanating from our Democratic friends should see this latest offering.
(You may notice I neutered the fund raising links in the letter)
This stuff is aimed at the center of support for the Democrats today; The Michael Moore DUnderhead types.

Dear Dan,

On February 2, Bush will try to mislead the American people on Social Security. But with your help, we will spread the truth with our "Watch Bush Mislead" fact sheet.

Act now to help sap the strength from Bush's effort to use the power of the presidency to break the back of Social Security.

George W. Bush is leading the charge when it comes to the Republicans' all-out effort to dismantle Social Security. Next Wednesday, February 2, is a critical day for him: the irst State of the Union address of his second term. He's planning on using his State of the Union speech as a powerful launching pad for his Social Security scare campaign. But we've got some plans of our own.
Today, the Democratic National Committee is launching a "Million Dollars in Seven Days" Social Security campaign. We'll use those funds as the seed money for the most extensive, far-reaching, and effective grassroots issues campaign America has ever seen.
This week we have two key tasks. First, we need your help to launch our campaign with your donation today:

htpsw.democrats.org/support

Second, we'll be distributing a "Watch Bush Mislead" fact sheet across the nation prior to the Bush's State of the Union Speech, and we'll need your help to spread the word. Keep an eye on your email in box for your copy.
President Bush knows that on February 2, he has an opportunity to shape the 2005 debate in favor of his reckless, radical Social Security plan. We can't let him get away with it. He will use the State of the Union speech to distort the facts about the current state of Social Security and to hide the disastrous consequences of his plan to dismantle this bedrock program that has kept generations of seniors out of poverty
Republicans want a vote within six months to break Social Security's fundamental guarantee, partially privatize the system, and turn it from an unbreakable promise into a stock market gamble. Bush's radical plan will add a trillion dollars to the already bulging Bush deficit.
We're going to make sure that, before they hear the President's words on February 2, the American people know the truth. It's a critical first step in sapping the strength from Bush's effort to use the power of the Presidency to break the back of Social Security.
We're counting on your active participation and your strong financial support.

Together, we're going to stop Bush cold when he tries to mislead the American people about Social Security next week. And for anyone who votes to dismantle Social Security in 2005, we're going to stop them cold on Election Day in 2006.
Winning this struggle over the future of Social Security is essential. We've got to demonstrate our determination and our grassroots power right out of the box in 2005. Otherwise, Bush and the Republicans will try to roll over us on one issue after another for four long years.
We will never let that happen. Let's set the tone right now in the seven days leading up to the President's State of the Union Address. Thank you for adding your energy and passion to this critical initiative.

Sincerely,
Doug, Eric, Jesse, Nancy, Morra, and Josh
